Description "And then, after that, Maggy got tripped by some other girl in our class during soccer… I forget the girl's name, though."
"Did your teacher do anything"
"Yeah. She gave the girl a detention… Maggy didn't go to the nurse, though. She only had a scrape."
"That's good…"
The conversation slowed after that, and for a while the only sounds that were heard was the clanking of silverware on plates, and the slow brewing of a pot of coffee.
I watched Mackenzi ear her breakfast, taking her toast with big bites and nibbling cutely on her eggs. She was wearing her favorite shirt this morning—it was a dark blue short-sleeve with a pink cougar paw in the middle.
"Hey, Mac?" I asked. I'd always given her that nickname, ever since the night I'd picked her up originally.
"Yeah?" Mackenzi's ears perked as she responded. She looked up towards me, her eyes filled with wonder at what I might ask her.
"I'm sorry for getting home so late. You were in bed when I came back, so I let you sleep…"
Mackenzi gave out a laugh, to my surprise. She gave me a smile that warmed my body, and told me, "It's okay, silly! I know that your work keeps you late sometimes."
I smiled, and finished the last of my eggs silently. Mackenzi began humming a tune while she continued eating, although I couldn't recognize it.
The morning had been rolling by slowly, but not in a negative way. I was enjoying every minute of it.
I got up and began packing Mackenzi's lunch for school, while she finished her food. As if timed perfectly, she finished her food when I'd completely assembled her lunch. I watched her skip over, and she gave me a tight hug, taking her lunchbag and placing it near her backpack.
"My bus is here!" I heard her shout to me.  She must have looked out the window and seen it. "I made you a lunch, too, by the way!" She added. I then heard the front door open.
"Thank you! Have a good day, I'll try to be back on time tonight!"
I heard the door shut, and I looked around the kitched for a lunch bag I might have missed. I didn't see anything in the room. There wasn't one on the counter, by the stove, or in the refrigerator when I opened it.
I assumed that she put it in my office. I walked out of the kitched, and down the short hall until I came to a wooden door; The door to my office. When I peeked inside, I saw that, indeed, there was a brown bag on my desk. I walked into the room and sat down on my chair—It was the kind that not only wheeled, but spun around—and pulled the bag onto my lap. It crinkled and made all sorts of noises as I unfolded the rolled-up top.
When I peeked inside, I saw an apple, two sandwiches apparently made with just peanut butter and jelly, and to my surprise, a pink piece of paper. As I pulled it out, examining it, I couldn't figure out what it might say… I opened it up, and upon seeing just the first words, my ears lay back and my eyes began to swell with tears.
"Today marks five years since you got me—Thank you for all you've done for me, even though I was such a trouble at first. I made your favorite sandwiches for you! P.S. Maybe some weekend, you can take me to go to work with you?" It read.
I wiped the tears from my face, and held the biggest smile I'd had in months. Although she was long gone, I couldn't help but whisper to my Mac, "You're welcome."
