Description Finally was able to put together what I think will be the base for Sahmika's room. Sorry about the file size and quality, this took 40 minutes to render at this size and seemed to finish early even though I set it to run much longer. I had to use strong smoothing and more painterly filters than I might normally use to get rid of the grain.  I'm not going to attempt to render this again until I have a new video card (and figuring out which one to buy is another huge story, I might write a journal about that asking for your advice shortly).

Anyway, let's go over some of the things in here!

* I ripped the shutters off a building from the Gatwyck set  (I think?) using the Geometry Editor, then put four of them on the window. I might replace the window with one from another building though because I want Smacky to be able to open the blinds and the windows as well to let fae in and out. I also don't understand why the window bars are not casting shadows here, maybe something to do with them being transmapped? Will have to experiment more later. Also removed the top detailing from the hutch on the left and the gothic mirror in the back using the Geometry editor so they'd fit under this roof and also to better fit the style.

* There are actually a lot of things in this scene that you can't see well from this angle: a shopping basket in the bottom hutch cupboard, a map on the far left wall, a broom and bucket in the corner, a ton of papers and books on the floor in front of the desk just out of view with a shelf and more books above that, a geometry editor-ripped door and window down the hall (they show up in the mirror from some angles), papers nailed to the walls out of view, and Smacky's old bedroll and water flask next to the hutch. Her throwing blades are also here, one on a hutch shelf and one stuck in the beam above, and her scabbards are on the left side of the hutch, one leaning up against it and one on the floor out of view. Her bracers and Briana Culaith top are the shiny things on the left side of the hutch, you can see one sword on the right side of it next to her boots, there's an hourglass, a coin chest with some scattered coins, and other clutter in the hutch, five dresses strewn all over, a bowl of apples on the desk, her diary (the red one that Eri is running off with on my journal header) under the bed, her knapsack hanging off the hutch, and the spear and shield I used in her image "All New Action" are mounted on the beam above.

* The fae are too bright here and there probably won't be three in here at once, but there will always be at least one to keep the plants healthy and provide light at night. I might have postworked the whole scene to be a little brighter than it should be, but the original was quite dark even with the Exposure set to 10.

* Only a few items have Iray shaders (mostly Smacky's gear and anything metal). It would obviously take a really long time to optimize all these surfaces, and I'll wait to do that until I have a video card that can preview the changes faster.

* Not sure what to put on that one empty shelf yet...I tried to put the bow she used in "Bullseye" but it wouldn't fit.

Rendered in DAZ Studio 4.9 w/ Iray, color correction and minor fixes in Photoshop CC. Uses countless items from DAZ and a few from Runtime DNA. Thank you very much for taking a look!

This is so funny.
Putting a dozen or so objects in a scene only to end up not showing them in the render. All that time, meticulously placing everything juust right.

Well, at least >I< know they're there...

Haha, it's actually kinda fun to place all those items and make it looked lived-in. Thanks very much for taking a look!

Another idea as far as getting the rendering process to work better would be to increase the amount of RAM memory your comp uses. When I had my current comp built, I told them to max out the RAM. I'm a Poser user and Poser 9 couldn't recognize all of it- I have 16GB now- but Poser Pro 11 can and it renders much better with larger files.

I have 32 GB of RAM in my machine now and it does make a difference. Powerful machines, and in Iray's case, powerful video cards, can make the difference between 3D art being enjoyable and being a slow tedious pain in the butt.

All very true. When I first got my comp, I was having problems with rendering. Then I found out there WAS no physical video card. Windows 10 was relying on a "Virtual" card. I had the shop go back and put an actual card in the system.

Agh, yeah you're not going to get far with 3D with a built-in video card.

Thank you very much! The render isn't anything special at all, but it's more of a challenge to put together a complete room from random parts than you'd think.

The whole thing is very special and anyone looking at it ( I hope ) would know exactly how much work has gone into it.

A wonderful job Snow.

you cut the top off my hutch! you philistine!     Actually this is  great image - at first I was thinking 'since when does snowy paint?' and then when I was reading your detail text I realized it was a heavily filtered image. Not your usual style but it looks pretty good anyways.  Let me know if you want the wood texture tile I used for the hutch to match up your other furniture

LOL sorry! I appreciate that you modeled it in a way that left a perfectly clean and natural top though.

Oh I have a million tiling wood textures already, but if it's not too difficult for you to post it somewhere, I'd certainly grab it.    Thank you very much!

EdenEvergreen [2016-01-10 09:26:34 +0000 UTC]

It's beautiful.

It looks like a place where someone lives. Someone who is mildly organized, but also mildly disorganized... or else, a moderately organized person who got distracted and left before she picked up after herself. I haven't read stories about your character (at least, not yet,) so I don't know if that's an accurate impression of her.

The room looks comfortable, and I really like what you did with the lighting.

Maybe one day I can do as well as that with the pictures in my head...

Have a creative day!

SnowSultan In reply to EdenEvergreen [2016-01-10 20:26:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Haha, my character is a little like you describe; she tries to be organized to keep her father happy, but she also gets excited about things and sometimes leaves a bit of a mess behind (which is probably what happened here).

Thanks again and take good care!

This is really cool! Loved the lighting, SnowS!!

I usually wait two and a half hours, sometimes less, sometimes a little more depending on the image. I don´t care as long as is no more than 4 hours. I always let it rendering alone and I go do something else, like watching tv or leave the house to buy some food...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowSultan In reply to Telperion-Studio [2016-01-10 03:34:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The longest I ever waited for a render was six hours, but mine usually take about an hour or so. I think this one should have taken about an hour and a half if it hadn't ended early for some reason (it showed being 60% done). Haha, yes I usually take a nap with my cat when I'm waiting for renders.

Mastador [2016-01-10 00:08:34 +0000 UTC]

I like what you have, it looks great, but I'd put a post under the shield to hold up that large beam and the roof above it. That way nothing falls in on Smacky while she's sleeping. LOL.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowSultan In reply to Mastador [2016-01-10 03:32:25 +0000 UTC]

That beam actually runs through the roof and is supported by a higher structure as well, so Smacky can sleep well.     It's also over the center of the room anyway. Thanks very much!

It's more of a money part, as the best is the most expensive. But if the rest of your computer is ok, you may can go for that one.
