To answer your friend's question, I would go about every day as I do now; not worrying about killing myself because too many people depend on me and I can help so many other people

Yes we have the choice, just not the motive. Nothing is worth killing ourselves. People get stronger everyday they decide (either consciously or not) to stay alive.
