Description This is one of those deceptively cheery images. The colors are bright but there's a lot more going on than you might expect. At least that's the feeling that I was going for. I'm not sure if I achieved it or not.

This is my entry for =Drifter-Tex 's character image contest which can be found here .

As per request this character has no name. If this image places in the contest it will belong to Drifter-Tex. No one else may use this image.

P.S. How do the mountains look, I drew them myself! *is proud*

CHARACTER STATS
Name: -
Gender: Female
Age: 7 years
Breed: Unknown
History/Personality:

When this mare was young she lived with a herd in a valley located next to a vast mountain range. For the most part the weather there was fair, but one year it began to rain and never seemed to stop. The equines of the valley were not bothered by this at first, as the rain helped the grass to grow and filled the creeks with fresh water to drink. Soon though the water began to come in excess and the ground churned to mud. The herd began to starve because the foliage could no longer grow in the waterlogged soil. When the alpha stallion finally made the decision to move the herd the rain suddenly tapered off.

The herd rejoiced, glad that they did not have to leave their home after all. Little did they know that the worst was yet to come. All of the rain had melted the snow caps on the mountains, causing the rivers to swell beyond their banks. The herd was not aware of this and one night when most of the equines were asleep the water rushed into the valley, causing a flood. Most of the equines died in the flood, this mare was one of few survivors. She didn't get away unscathed however, because as she swam for safety her ears filled with water and she was rendered nearly deaf. She lost all hearing in her left ear and most of her hearing in her right.

Because of her poor hearing this mare has a very hard time taking part in conversations with other equines or understanding social cues in general. She tends to try and overcompensate by finishing the sentences of others or trying to guess what it is that they are thinking. Her guesses are usually incorrect and this leads to many embarrassing situations and awkward pauses. As she strains to hear as much as possible she tends to tilt her head to the right, pulling her left ear back and her right forward. This, along with her expression of deep concentration, is usually misinterpreted as aggression or aloofness. She is in truth a kind soul who never feels that she fits in because she simply can't figure out what's going on around her.

Because of her history this mare has a deep fear of water. She is hesitant to venture out on the ice in the winter, because she is convinced that it will crack and she will be swallowed up by the murky depths. Another thing that frightens her are mice. She associates them with her youth, as a signal of impending danger. The mice were the first to escape the valley, sensing the threat of flood long before the equines could. Whenever this mare sees a mouse she fears the worst and flees in panic. She does not want to make the same mistake twice.

Breathtakingly beautiful, Snowy! My favorite parts have to be the cool border, your awesome job on the mountains, birds, the cracks on the ice and the color scheme. Oh and the snow effect. that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this: "Wow, it actually looks like it's snowing." I'm not sure if you want critique, so I'll leave that out.

The border was a last minute edit. The image originally had a plain white border.

I'm really glad to hear that you like the mountains, birds, and cracks! I'm a little unsure about the cracks in the ice myself, I keep wanting to go back and fix them a little. The snow effect was completely unintentional. I added a texture and suddenly these white spots turned up. So I decided to enhance them and make snow.

I'd actually love critique, so if you have suggestions please go right ahead. Here's my personal list of things that I don't like:

-The right fore hoof. It looks odd.
-Tail smudging, I hate smudging with GIMP.
-Shadow, it doesn't look right
-I need a reflection on the ice.

I agree with the first two. I also think the cutting on the right ear looks a little jagged.

I actually don't mind the shadow. It doesn't look bad to me. And I wouldn't know anything about the reflection, since I'm not familiar with ice reflections.

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll try my best to fix the right ear when I go back and redo the right hoof.

I LOVE all of the detail. <3 Wow.

The one thing I'd just like to add- ice makes a faint and distorted reflection and a shadow.

Thank you!

Yes, I realize that the horse should have a reflection. I tried but I couldn't get it to look realistic on the bumpy parts of the ice. It looked sort of flat and unrealistic. I might make a second attempt if I have the time.

Yeah, it can be really challenging on bumpy ice. I just wanted to let you know- I know that I ALWAYS forget little things like shadows, so I wanted to make sure that you left it out on purpose.

Yep, I'm still trying to decide if I should go back and fix it. My computer is being a pain, it keeps freezing when I'm working with GIMP.

This is amazingly detailed! I love the mouse! He/she has little tracks in the snow! I just love how much time and effort you put in your work. I think the mountains turned out wonderfully as well!

Thank you, I'm really pleased with those tracks as well. I've never drawn anything like that before so I was a little concerned that they wouldn't look realistic enough. Thank you so much for the compliments, they mean a lot to me.
