Description you don't call yourself emo when you're depressed. or when you cut. emo is a music style.
you're cutting? you have a serious problem. talk to your parents, if you can't talk to your parents, talk to a close relative, if you don't have that either, talk to a doctor/therapist/someone.

cutting =/= emo
depression =/= emo

Emo is a style of rock music influenced by punk rock and featuring introspective and emotionally fraught lyrics.
In addition to music, "emo" is often used more generally to signify a particular relationship between fans and artists, and to describe related aspects of fashion, culture, and behavior.
emo is from origin MUSIC.

""Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as the emo subculture. Usually among teens, the term "emo" is stereotyped with wearing slim-fit jeans, sometimes in bright colors, and tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands. Studded belts and black wristbands are common accessories in emo fashion. Some males also wear thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.

The emo fashion is also recognized for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Also popular is hair that is straightened and dyed black. Bright colors, such as blue, pink, red, or bleached blond, are also typical as highlights in emo hairstyles. Short, choppy layers of hair are also common. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad. In the early 2000s, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look,but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the color black replacing sweater vests.

Emo has been associated with a stereotype that includes being particularly emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. It has also been associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide. "

mind that I underlined the text about 'stereotyping' and 'associating with'
feel the need of more info? please feel free to read this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo it's the site with most data. you can check other sites too.

depression and cutting is/are NOT COOL

depression is a serious illness. using it for attention is wrong. positive attention is always better than negative attention anyway!! :/
and even if emo happens to include 'sensetive behaviour'. this does not mean you should take it to this level.
there's lot's of depressed people that don't even look like emo's. not in the slightest tiniest way. (except for their behaviour. but emo is more like a fashion and music style..
I made this stamp trying to clarify this. because there's way too much stereotyping going on. and this whole 'cutting and depression is/are cool' thing is just wrong. : |
it was mainly to point that out.
Please favourite it if you plan to use it. Thank you in advance!

It's been seen that way because many people who are attracted to the music style are also depressed, etc.
It's because of people such as me ;-;
Sorry dudes, didn't mean to create a stereotype xD

Emo is from the origin music, therefore I am sick of people constantly walking up to me asking "Are you depressed?" because of my music and clothing style. Just because I wear black skinny jeans and band shirts doesn't mean all I say is "WAHH!!! Nobody understands me! I'm gonna cut myself in the corner now!!" In fact it just means that's the music I find appealing and the clothes I enjoy wearing. I can still have a happy, bubbly personality, serious personality.

Frankly what I hate about emo the most is emo hatebrats who make up shit because they're butturt people like other things. Personally I consider myself emo kei[[Emo/Visual kei mix, since I like both]]. Emo is actually short for emotional hardcore, not just emotional. A dumb mistake people make way too often.

Stereotypes; the reasonΒ a lot ofΒ new mix-genreΒ bands want to be called "indie" and not "emo".

I don't listen to either, though. I DO listen to one alternative/mixed-genreΒ band thatΒ defines itself asΒ "indie-pop", however. This band happensΒ to be my favorite band, cookie to anyone who knows.

I found this to be interesting, but however, I must say it is not how I feel. No, cutting yourself is not cool. I've done it. I've dealt with anxiety and depression. Cutting gives off endorphins, so the physical pain over symbolizes the mental pain, and yet represents the mental pain one may be going through.Β

I agree with the stereotyping though. You have made a good point.Β

Oh I was not making a point about self harm itself whatsoever, it was about how people think emo is related to it.
I was only saying that referring to a coping mechanism as cool makes no sense, therefor it's not cool.
I hope you will remain strong and not relapse. I'm a fellow recovered self harm addict so I know there's a lot more to it.

Right?! Last time I checked emo was also short for emotional!....I think.....But these stereotypes are retarded, if you cut you need to talk to someone right away.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snuf-Stamps In reply to BleedIntoMe [2013-07-17 09:20:40 +0000 UTC]

no it's not. It's actually a music genre, people that listen to it got called 'emo'. Then it got related to self harm because some people that dealt with the addiction could relate to the lyrics of the emo music genre, then emo began to mean 'someone that self harms'. but this give a very wrong impression since clothes and music have nothing to do with someone's personal struggles.

it depends on the context. if you call a person an emo it's the same as calling a person gothic or geek. Obviously emo comes from emotional. It is very confusing to use emo to describe someone emotional though. It's better to just use 'sensitive' or the full 'emotional'

I really hate it when people say crap like this.
Do you even know what depression or cutting is like?
If you really did wouldn't you just let the depressed and/or self harmers call themselves whatever and not make a big deal about it?
Now if it's someone that you truly know and believe with a passion that they are not "emo" it's understandable why you would point this out but if you don't know them or how much crap they take everyday I wouldn't risk giving them anymore crap.
I partially agree with the stamp.
There are people out there who don't know what emo is and just call them self that because they wear tight pants, black clothing and have choppy hair.
That is a stereotype anyway, but whatever.
The people that cut do not do it because they think it is "cool".
They do it to help the pain and to feel in control.
Besides when you cut it releases endorphins.

I'm sorry for ranting and sounding rude but I just really wanted to say something.
Don't hate me.
