Description ...so anyway, apparently the apes aren't that popular as a subject for anthropomorph-ification, supposedly because there's not a lot of point to it since they're practically there already in terms of the hands and more-or-less upright stance: personally I prefer to think that should allow the apes to be a slightly more advanced form of the same kind of 'evolution' - since they've already got most of the hard work done, they'd be able to concentrate their energies on becoming the brainiacs of the anthro world (not least since they're theoretically advanced in that department too) rather than mucking about trying to figure out how much their golf-swing / sword-grip (etc.) has been improved by the development of an opposable thumb...

- aaaaannyway - this one's a bit of a cheat, in that it's a re-vamp of an older sculpt I did - he used to have a little lizard sitting on his carry-bag, which I actually didn't like that much; I'd been meaning to do something about it for a while or two, when my hand was forced somewhat by the fact the big orange git went and fell of his shelf and smashed his face and arm off - necessitating some understandable repairs, and opening up the while I'm at it clause that basically involved bashing it one with a chisel to knock the little scaly sod off his perch.

Thus did Fulto become a born-again druid of Mother Uurth, and here he is now having a potter-about through the woods doing all the druid-type stuff that druids get up to...

only twelve faves? Your definitely one of the most under rated artists on this site.

- it seems the notion of primate-flavoured anthro-characters are not normally very well-received or highly-considered - always seems a bit strange to me since they're the most obviously adaptable to the genre without having to undergo any really serious evolutionary upheavals. But anyway - thanks for that, and for the fave(s), greatly appreciated on both counts. Good to hear from you, hope all's tickety-boo

This is great and has been photographed really well! I can't really tell what scale it is!

- thanks for that - I tend to do most of these daft things at (near as possible) 1/6th scale, i.e. about on a par with action man/ g.i. joe, whichever's yer poison...

This is just stunning. The detail, the hair, the flask, the indents in the wood, everything! It's all down to a T.

I cheated - it was only half -done, and then I left it overnight in a shop-window and some pixies came and finished him off for me - all they wanted in return was a cheese sandwich

- but nevertheless, very many thanks - it always pays to get as good a photo of these things as I can... I guess it's sort of showing off on my part, but heck, I suppose I ought to show where all the time went when it comes to these critters - anyway, nice to know you like the old fella, thanks again

You should have kept the lizard, that would have been a cool touch I think. I have a soft spot for lizards I love those eyes, how do you do them? Glass beads of some kind?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

snuurg In reply to iduck [2004-10-25 08:55:30 +0000 UTC]

- what I really should've done would be to have re-done the lizard but better, I just wasn't pleased with the thing and felt it detracted too much from the main figure - that and the fact I was overcome with being a lazy, short-cut-taking half-arsed-job-doing old git...

...meanwhile, the eyes: well on this fella they're just painted right on to the figure as they were modelled, but I do sometimes make 'proper' eyes for figures if the size of an eyeball allows for it.

iduck In reply to snuurg [2004-10-28 01:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, you DO have a point, it might have taken away from the figure a lot.

Ah It looks like the eyes are glass, but maybe you're just that good at painting

I have to say I don't really go for apes and monkeys but this is fantastic. Great colouring/weathering.

As for the anthro bit, he has that "intelligence" in his eyes that brings him maybe a little too close to us.

snuurg In reply to jax0n [2004-09-09 21:58:37 +0000 UTC]

...yeah, that could be it - it's like, when you look into a dog or cat's eyes, you can kind of guess that it's thinking something along the lines of feed me/let me out/etc. - but with the apes, you're sort of half wary that they're studying you, too...

Great story. In an offtopic, your vocabulary makes me chuckle. He looks like a crosswalk guard with the orange vest.. Druidic crosswalk guard of the forest, yeah!
Amazing job on the facial structure, by the way! And you got the color of the hair perfect too. I'm jealous. What kind of paints do you use anyway?

snuurg In reply to brighid [2004-09-09 22:02:59 +0000 UTC]

- glad to be chuckalicious in the vocabularian department, ta for that: paints-wise, I generally use Humbrol enamels...actually, that might be an unintentional erring of the truth - I seem to remember that the Humbrol factory blew up a while back, so they might be somebody else's paints by now, unless the bloke at the top is keeping it going from his garden shed...

- ahh - big big vats of oil-based paint, y'see: and I'm guessing maybe somebody's ciggie-break round the back ended up being a bit longer than five minutes after a badly-bouncing dodgy discard went the wrong way and kicked it all off, either that or somebody was fixing for a bit of the old insurance...

Just out of curiosity, how big is this sculpture?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

snuurg In reply to aubergine [2004-08-31 22:04:39 +0000 UTC]

- he's just shy of eight inches - I try to work most of these critters in at the equivalent of about 1/6th scale - same sort of size-age as your average action man/G.I. Joe kinda thing - at which he's about the size an orangutan would be - in comparison to a human - if he was inclined to walk around in the woods with a big stick and a waistcoat. Thanks for the compliments, by the way!

...sorry to take a while getting back, you got knocked off the bottom of my page by about a squillion other people, seem to have had a heck of a time finding this again - anyway, did you have a particular design/pose/etc. thunked up, or are you just considering the possibilities at the minute?

Good job on the fur and skin textures and color. I love the plant settings that you put your models in, it really helps the illusion that they truly exist. I should try to gain the realism you create in my own drawings. Thanx for the inspiration.

- does add that extra something, I reckon - the lush greens seem to be particularly apt I think for these three for the whole jungle-habitat, I'm trying to find somewhere that I can sort out a decent sort of savannah or desert kind of setting too, but the greenery works well for most subjects in any case if I don't get anywhere with that little quest in the meanwhile... and thanks, very gratified to hear I'm being a bit inspiring with all of this scrabbling about in the bushes...
