Description So I figured I would do a tutorial on how to use STP since lots of people don't seem to know the concept of it, but I hope my tutorial is of any use haha, this might be hard to understand for beginners (tho my way of explaining things can be messy too)

Feel free to ask questions!

I only used my own CV banks as example hahaha June is mine and ACT 1 was a disaster.

I'll gladly take any requests for tutorials for utau, if needed! I have a tuning tutorial on the way, but if there are any other ideas, just write, yee
(also thanks for all the views this has gotten! I hope it helped~ )

Is there a way to do this without needing to OTO it? I had no idea what OTOing was until after I made my VB.

Oh, sorry for the late answer!!
STP works even if you have an oto set or not, it just changes the starting point of the note you put STP on.
Nonetheless it's almost impossible to get your VB to sound good if you don't have oto haha, trust me, my utau went without oto for several months until I realized it was necessary :')

You said the sum of two must be 250 (which is the default preutterance) and you give example: 170STP and 80 preutterance. what do you mean by 80 preutterance? i don't get it... do you mean 170 STP and 80 overlap or what? can you explain it?

Oh ye it can be a bit confusing to explain haha-- If you click "reset" on a note's note property, you will get the default preutterance for the VCV bank you're working with (it's usually 250 or 300 ms but it's not the same for every VCV bank!). This marks how many milliseconds (ms) there are between the start of the recording and where the consonant ends in the oto (the "a k" in a "a ka" note).

If you want to cut off some/all of the previous vowel for the note, you can enter how many ms that you want utau to cut off in the STP box. But if you just enter the STP, it will start the note before it's meant to (the difference is very small for CV so that's why you don't need to use it there). That's why you have to remove the amount of ms you enter in the STP from the preutterance box. So ye if you remove 170 ms of the note with STP, you have to remove that amount of ms from the preutterance (250-170=80).
The overlap doesn't have anything to do with that, but I'd reduce the amount of overlap too if you're removing a lot of the note with STP ;v;

So, say the default is 250, and i set 100 for STP, then i must put 150 at preutterance box, am i right?

could you replicate these effects with the envelope? i feel like that would be a lot easier...

You could do that for CV, ye, it'd give you the same effect as STP, but I'd recommend using consonant velocity instead- As for VCV yeah you could also do that (or alternatively use the "- [syllable]" recordings to get rid of the previous vowel - This might make it sound choppy tho), but I find it hard to figure out how to set the envelopes so that they blend properly I definitely prefer using STP, because it's so much easier for me to get the notes to blend properly this way, instead of trying to find the right position for each envelope, but it might be because I'm used to using STP now

yeah, now that I understand STP better it's more useful for this because if you use the envelope it leaves a gap I think the envelope is easier to understand, though, since you can kinda see where the consonant starts and stuff.
