This is one (finished) piece of a number of pieces I'm working on presently. It also had a number of working titles, but...I decided to stick with this one. I started this a couple of days ago after having a slightly disconcerting conversation with Chris. He and I are both displeased with our lives for a great number of reasons, none of them easily defined and all intertwined and complex. I won't get into detail of the evolutions of the conversation but I've come to numerous of conclusions this weekend--I finally had the weekend off, which means I had time to myself to THINK and DO stuff that I wanted to do--and all those conclusions are slightly disheartening. The most disheartening of all is that I don't think he'll ever know how much I love him.Regardless, I had made this for him. It started out as a penguin, just the penguin, but then I had started "writing" in my head and the snow, the ice, the water, the message in a bottle just kinda happened. Rather, it seemed like I was recapitulating what was said, and what I felt, into this particular piece. I cried a whole lot doing it (lame!), but I consider this another significant piece despite its minimalism/simplicity.

In all seriousness, there's something about this picture that touches my heart. I can't seem to put it into words. The baby penguin, and the picture itself, is simply adorable to behold. I know I sound weird but it feels tear-jerking to me. It reminds me of how I felt after seeing Happy Feet.

That's what I've heard. I've seen March of the Penguins, though, which I found extremely depressing...but very inspiring at the same time.

March of The Penguins was a great movie. When you take a documentary and have Morgan Freeman as the narrator, you know you have a masterpiece. But seriously, it did have depressing moments, mostly how life is so difficult when you're a baby penguin.
I'm a type of guy who has had myself exposed to depictions of brutality, cruelty, ignorance, war, and macabre....and thus, I forget how sweet movies like Happy Feet (and MoTP for that matter) are. This picture seems to have a similar effect.

In fact, call me crazy (again), but this picture has had some effect on me during these recent events (VT). The picture is such a peaceful presentation that it's tear-jerking, and it causes me to compare animals like penguins to humanity (or rather, humanity in this era).
I also read the description of this picture too. It adds more to the emotion of this picture, too.

But I do get what you mean. There are certain AMAZING artists, or art pieces on DA, that seem to get lost in the shuffle from time to time--either because the artist's gallery is very small to begin with, or they don't update their gallery every single day. I also think that subject matter in the art pieces has a lot to do with it.

the harshness of the left side of the penguin (our left) seem to bother me a bit since the rest of the picture doesn't have any thin dark edges.

When you're talking about thin dark edges, you're talking about the iceberg snowbank thing, right? The thing he's standing on?
I'm just making sure it's THAT and not something completely different. I'm glad you pointed it out, because I kept overlooking the edges despite the fact that I knew it would lack balance...but that's what I get for doing final edits at 4:30 in the morning, I think?
