The Prince is seated on his ancestral throne. The two steps beneath it have only ever known the weight of royal toes as previous Princes have climbed them to reach it. Because they have exclusively borne the weight of these Heirs these steps are regarded as a sacred symbol of legitimate succession, just as the crown has only ever rested on the monarch's head. For centuries the Prince's throne room has been guarded at all times. Commoners are sometimes permitted to approach the throne on their knees and kiss these steps as a display of fealty to the male Heir.
