Description I'm gonna ink/color this one soon. Heading out for another hike with the dogs and then we miight be seeing Jurassic Park in 3D tonight! RAPTORS! Now, about this little sketch....

It's not too surprising that Demon is so full of hate and aggression, it's all he's ever known. He was born into the dark world of dog fighting and has been abused, neglected, trained to fight, shown praise only when he's vicious, used as a stud for profit and and then left to sit on his chain with all these memories and emotions. He's never known love, only hate - even the females he was paired with he was allowed no emotional connection to, they were simply puppy making machines used to breed more pit bulls into a living hell. True to his breed he only wants to please his master and the only way he can do this is by acting like a monster...like a Demon. He's only worth something if he's a winner and for years he was just that, coming out the victor fight after fight. He had made himself a nasty reputation and more importantly, made his master proud. He'd made him a lot of money through those wins and even more by breeding and thus adding to his "champion" lineage. But one day he was bound to come up against a younger, stronger fighter...one day he was bound to loose...and then he would be worthless. If his master didn't just let the other pit finish him he would hang or electrocute him himself. He'd seen it happen to others before, and he knew the humans showed no remorse in doing it...in fact they seemed to enjoy it. He knew that eventually this would also be his fate...that is, if he didn't do the one thing he KNEW he shouldn't and turn on his master.

He wanted a monster, a demon, and that's what he got.

Someday I'll write out a detailed version of Demon's story...the things he goes through are all too real for pit bulls trapped in this dark world. I highly suggest reading "The Lost Dogs": [link]

it's terrible.

they do that to people, too.

ugh. don't get me started on that.

poor Demon. Spark will likely lose his other paw trying to get through to Demon.

it's not Demon's fault.
gah!!!!

Pits are a very malleable breed, and a weak owner who can't handle them, or one who wants them to fight can turn them into uncontrollable monsters. My sister somehow turned into a big proponent for them, doing local pit bull rescues at the animal shelter she worked at, even driving 3-4 of them 2 states out to home them in her own teeny Hyundai. When Michael Vick's were confiscated, a couple of the ones that weren't so bad off came to the shelter she worked at because there were so many of them and so few shelters in the state that would take them. She has her dufus one that lives with my parents for now while she's out of the country going to vet school, but apparently she wants to do shelter medicine when she gets out. No money in it, but she loves to take care of the animals.
The dufus one she has is basically one giant muscle, even though she can't exercise much because it screws her hips up. She never would, but I would be terrified if that dog ever turned on me.

Yeah, they need a sturdy, well educated hand for sure, they can be loyal to a fault, but in the right home they're wonderful dogs. I've personally never met a mean one myself - just overly-happy "butt waggers" that wanna lick your face XD That's pretty cool that some of Vick's dogs turned up at the shelter your sister worked at! I think it's amazing how some (not all, sadly) of them were able to make a complete turn around...I read that one even went on to be a therapy dog. Just goes to show that just because they were used to fight doesn't mean they can't become great dogs with a little TLC. I've seen stories of dogs pulled from truly horrific situations and still be so forgiving and eager to love.

There's one shelter not far from me that won't even adopt out "pit bull types". If one has the misfortune of going in there they won't come back out. They even refused to give a puppy up to a pit specific rescue that was more than qualified in dealing with the breed, which I just found outrageous. Their reasoning is "they can be dangerous in the wrong hands" - true, but so can any dog and it should be their job (or the rescue's) to make sure they end up in the right hands. Plus we were talking about a puppy with no history of aggression...to deny it a chance is just sad.

I'm glad more people are coming around to this breed, at least, and seeing them in another light. That isn't to say they're angels, nor are they devils, just dogs...and it's usually the humans that need the most training.

PS: Dunno if you've ever seen this but it's such an awesome song: [link]

I think I mentioned it before, but when my sister first got hers, I was terrified of it. The media, what limited amount I watch/read had done it's task. Though after being around her, seeing how she let my sister's and mother's cats beat her up (playfully) while she just took it, I could see that she was probably the most eager dog I've ever came across to please a human.

Yep I remember you telling me that, that's so awesome I've never really had a fear of any breed but I know to be cautious around any dog I don't know...at least I do now. When I was about four years old I walked right up to "the meanest dog in the neighborhood" and stuck my hand through the fence...only to get kissed of course my parents were horrified and everyone was convinced he was just "tasting" me - and yeah, that WAS stupid, but I was four. I also ran up to a skunk when I was that age and called it "doggy". Wasn't the brightest of kids. XD

His story is so sad! I wish one day he would know what happiness is like, it's never a good thing if one's life is full of hate and aggression...
