With number 6 in this picture, [link] Basically you go overtop of the pencil that you put down and smudge it around creating a thin level of pencil 'smears'. Make sense?

The materials I used were a stomper or what some people call a smudger, 4B pencil, and mechanical pencils for detailing. Either than that I tried to make sure there was a lot of contrast. thanks for the comment!
