Description
Hello there. This is SofiaBlythe2014. Here's another quickies article for Barbie: It Takes Two. It's for episodes 19-20. Let's begin.
1. Costumed Capers
Writer: Dan Salgarolo
Director: Larry Anderson
Date: October 1, 2022
Synopsis: "The girls get mistaken for thieves."
Most episodes up to this point are solid, or are at least have decent ideas that aren't executed the best. This is just really empty and doesn't have much in the way of substance. I'll elaborate. We have the girls putting on cat costumes to advertise some business in order to get more money for their album. Things take a turn for the worse when they get mistaken for two pranksters that are wearing the same cat costumes. There's also a subplot with Simone and Kel at a restaurant as he tries to remember a special anniversary dish. I'm not really that invested in the main plot. It takes like halfway through the episode to even get to this point. I wouldn't mind this if the girls' conflict was engaging, but it's not. They try to give a message on not trying too hard or something, but it's just thrown in. The girls act basically the same and the emphasis on their stress from hard work at the beginning kind of falls flat since they're both stressed for the same reasons and we don't see them try our unique ideas to overcome this. The stuff with Simone and Kel showed potential to be great, but we don't really find out more about them. It's just background noise despite their contributions to helping out. I think this episode could've been better if it was about trying to give them a good anniversary present, but they go a bit too far in trying to raise the money. The side characters are forgettable and aren't worth mentioning about. The episode at best is just slightly amusing, but ultimately disposable. It's just there.
2. Cupid Shuffle
Writer: Kendall Michele Haney
Director: Dom MacKinnon
Date: October 1, 2022
Synopsis: "The girls throw a school dance."
So here we have an episode that I can definitely call good. It's about the Barbies trying throw the Handler spring dance since they're part of the planning committee with two characters named Paul and Emma (voiced by Robbie Daymond and Cassidy Marie Huff). Things get interesting when Barbie gets a letter from Ken back home, which causes her to make a mistake and give everyone the wrong letters. Back at Golden Beach High, we have Teresa, Renee, Nikki, and Daisy not wanting to go to the spring dance. So this episode was pretty fun and just about everyone is in top form. It helps give a solid message on how you can do things with those you care about, whether as friends or romantic partners. The conflict with Malibu Barbie is solid in how she does have feelings for Ken, but just wants to put more focus on making everyone happy. She even thought about these letters so that those who don't have the courage to ask others out can have it done for them. She just can't keep priorities straight. Her accidentally mixing up the letters talking about feelings works with how she was just trying to help Brooklyn Barbie lighten her load when she was getting tired, and is doing what she can to make sure no one is unhappy. She's not thinking straight. Back home, I do like how everyone doesn't want to go to the dance, but because they don't want to force themselves to go get dates. They would usually go without dates since they'd usually go with Barbie, who usually doesn't have a date. They don't reject the idea of romance (even encouraging Barbie to tell Ken how she feels), but just want to feel like they can go to a social gathering without feeling ostracized or pressured. It's pretty nice. Teresa encouraging everyone to go even without dates is befitting of our student body president wanting to lift people's spirits up. Back with the Barbies, we get some nice teamwork between them with Malibu Barbie being able to act quickly and Brooklyn Barbie being able to ground her. They eventually get the letters to their proper recipients, which is nice. Probably the only complaint I have is with Paul and Emma. It's not so much the characters themselves, but more how they're integrated. Paul is a pretty nice guy, but they highlight his awkwardness a bit too much in how he wants to ask Emma out. It's not that endearing. As for Emma, I will say that I like how she has a disability (she's in a wheelchair), and no one comments on it. They just accept her as is. That's pretty cool. I just wish there was a bit more oomph to her character rather than just wanting to go out with Paul. I think this could've been solved if we saw the characters in at least one other episode before this one. Still, everything else about the episode is pretty good.
Thanks for reading. Have a good day.
