Description Hey everyone. This is SofiaBlythe2014. For this comparison, I'm comparing the My Little Pony Movie (2017) to the Sofia The First series finale movie "Forever Royal". They both focus on princesses associated with the color purple (okay, Sofia wears pink here, but you get the idea) trying to take back their home from an evil dictator during a perilous adventure. To show how they're similar and different, we look at these factors: The Story, The Lead Protagonist, The Supporting Characters, The Villains, Theming, Music, and The Conclusion. Yeah, this will be lengthy. Let's begin.

The Story:

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): This movie takes place on the day of the Festival Of Friendship. Tempest Shadow and her partner Grubber invade Canterlot in the name of The Storm King, and petrify the three princesses, with the The Storm King asking them to get Twilight in order to get the magic necessary to power up his staff and take over Equestria . Twilight Sparkle and her friends then go to various locations outside of Equestria in order to get help to defeat them. However, interpersonal drama within the group makes this difficult.

Forever Royal: This movie takes place on the day of Sofia's graduation, with everyone graduating from Royal Prep. However, Vor ends up harnessing the power of the Wicked Nine and takes over Prisma so that she can carry out her plans to take over the Ever Realm. Sofia must team up with her family and friends so as to stop her and save the day.

Both movies have pretty good pacing due to the extra time allotted to help flesh things out. However, the story structure still varies quite a bit. The MLP Movie has to establish at least three new locations and new characters all within a 99 minute time slot so as to be able to draw in new viewers due to its status as a standalone theatrical movie. Sofia, in contrast, has a roughly 67 minute runtime, but still takes advantage of it. Since this is a series finale tv movie, it's allowed to be much more rooted in continuity, and mostly uses locations were already familiar with, hence why just jumping into the action works well here (though some suspension of disbelief is required since the Wicked 9 plot starts wrapped up).

The Lead Protagonist: Both Twilight and Sofia are similar in that they're both plucky princesses who are doing what they can to help save the day as hard as they can, and go through quite a bit of personal drama. They do still differ though.

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): Twilight is shown to have more of a cynical personality here. She's more determined and focused on the mission to the point of irritability and snapping. However, it's also made clear why. She's shown as rather doubtful of if she can make it as a princess due to how she's expected to set an example and be there for others. It makes sense since she's an adult.

Forever Royal: Sofia, in contrast, is more well adjusted. She certainly goes through personal drama that makes you feel bad for her, but she's also shown as being less cynical and more proactive in her duties to protect others. It makes sense since she is established to be a prodigy, and how she always thinks of her family in hard times. It also helps that she asks for help when necessary.

The Supporting Characters:

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): Among established characters, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and Spike stand out the most. Rarity helps Capper to change. Rainbow Dash inspires Captain Calaeno and crew to show loyalty. Pinkie Pie inspires Princess Skystar (and eventually Queen Novo) to be optimistic and take some action to help Equestria. Each of the new characters mentioned gets plenty of time to shine.

Forever Royal: The most prominent characters are Amber, Roland, Miranda, and Cedric. Amber shows how supportive she is of Sofia by covering for her when need be, and not hesitating to help her break into the castle. It's revealed that King Roland wished for him and his wife to have children, but her poor physical stability couldn't handle it, and she died, thus making his extreme actions justified. Miranda is shown as supportive of Sofia's actions, but also rightfully concerned for her well being. Though mostly in the climax, Cedric shows how far he's changed by taking the initiative to find a spell to free Sofia. We also see how Ruby, Jade, Vivian, and Desmond are so inspired by her that they help her without a second thought. The Secret Library narrator also encourages her to never give up.

The Villains: Both movies have a sympathetic villain, a sociopathic villain, and comic relief villains. Both also have an army of mindless soldiers following them. However, it's about pro activity that makes them different.

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): Tempest Shadow is shown as proactive and sadistic in her attempts to capture Twilight, but we see it's because it's due to a broken horn that caused people to shun her. The Storm King just mostly sits on his throne giving orders and is only directly brutal in the climax, and has no redeeming qualities due to seeing them as disposable. Though Grubber supports Tempest's behavior as comic relief, he also reels her in like a moral compass.

Forever Royal: Prisma is the more sympathetic villain since, though she also wanted to take over the Ever Realm, it's all to prove she's very powerful, and was shown to actually hold up her end of the bargain since she supported Twitch and Wormwood. Much like the Storm King, she's less active due to being possessed. No attempt is made to humanize Vor since she's shown as a sociopathic, manipulative monster who's willing to use mind control and is not hesitant to murder others. She has Tempest's more proactive personality. Twitch and Wormwood's true colors are shown when they abandon following Prisma just because Vor is more powerful.

Theming:

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): The movie is meant to reinforce the show's theme on how powerful friendship is, and it works here. We see Twilight's influence to inspire others to act towards the greater good due to how she at least tries maintaining composure, and thus everyone rallying around her feels very satisfying.

Forever Royal: This movie is meant to reinforce one of the show's themes on how strong love can be, and it definitely works since we see her influence, though this goes a bit more by also showing how her family helps keep her well put together.

Music: Both movies have exceptional soundtracks, with some songs "Time To Be Awesome" and "One For All", being directly similar. They still differ though.

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): With a larger budget for theatrical release, Daniel Ingram was able to get a live orchestra for the music, and it shows. We have pop songs, epics, and all kinds of instruments to accompany it, like trumpets and pianos.

Forever Royal: The music is still definitely top notch here. The music here is more rooted in spectacle and fantasy, especially when it comes to referencing past episodes. Lighting and camera shots really compliment the singing, such as the zoom in on Sofia as she's climbing the ship, or the heavy amount of green inside the amulet.

The Conclusion:

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): In the end, Tempest Shadow and Grubber turn on the Storm King, and petrify him with his staff when helping Twilight and company after the former sees the light. The Storm King also dies. Equestria is saved, and new alliances are formed.

Forever Royal: The movie ends with Sofia seeing the light and literally harnessing the love she to defeat Vor and free Prisma. Cedric then rallies everyone to free both of them from the amulet. Prisma chooses to go back to prison while Sofia becomes a full fledged protector.

Both plots do end with a villain dying and another villain realizing the error of their ways. However, the Storm King dies more or less at Tempest's hands while Vor dies at Sofia's hands so to speak. Plus, Tempest is willing to accept punishment but is forgiven while Prisma accepts her punishment but is brought back to jail out of pity and sorrow. Plus, the new alliances in MLP are meant to be continued into the series since this isn't a finale while Sofia becoming a full fledged protector is an end goal that's met because it's the end of the series.

And that's how they're similar and different. Let's see who wrote them.

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): Joe Ballarini, Rita Hsiao, Meghan McCarthy, Michael Vogel

Forever Royal: Craig Gerber & Michael G. Stern
