Description
1. Best Pals Pizza Delivery
Writer: Max Beaudry
Director: Jeremy Jensen
Date: April 23, 2021
Synopsis: "Fozzie and Kermit add a delivery service to their Pizza Parlor Palace."
I have a delivery for you. In this box, we have one great episode. Let's talk about it. The episode has Kermit and Fozzie adding a pizza delivery service to their business, and everyone wants pizza delivered to them. As Fozzie tries making the pizzas, Kermit puts the boxes together to deliver, but he gets distracted when watching the Wacky Alpacas. This episode has a good moral on how you shouldn't get distracted when doing a job. Let's talk about the episode in two halves.
First Half:
We start with Kermit and Fozzie revealing to their friends that they're adding a delivery service to their pizza place. Piggy then asks them to deliver 5 pizzas while they have a spa day. As Fozzie goes to make the pizza, Kermit goes to make the boxes and deliver them. He then gets distracted while watching the Wacky Alpacas, and goes inside the TV. So it's obvious that the conflict is about Kermit trying to not get distracted. I think it fits his character. He's normally pretty focused and tends to keep his eye on the ball. However, he's also pretty emotional and will act on how he feels, sometimes a bit too much. In this case, he (like Fozzie) is a big fan of Wacky Alpacas, acting on joy. We do at least get a few scenes of him trying to get back to his job, showing how he has some control in trying to do the right thing.
As for the world itself, I really like the 2D aesthetic. It's bright, colorful, and Kermit fits very well with this style. In any case, he then meets up with Walter the alpaca (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), who offers to show him around. Much like Kermit, Walter is a pretty nice guy in how he wants to help others. In this case, he's trying to get balloons for his friend Wanda (voiced by Melanie Harrison), but he gets easily distracted. However, he's much more impulsive and tends to act more on instinct because of the number of activities he takes part in, like ice cream or surfing. He's not dumb, but he has more trouble prioritizing what to do at the moment.
Second Half:
When Kermit goes back to the restaurant, he sees that all their friends want pizza, and he hasn't even finished putting the boxes together. He's definitely letting his problems pile up. Even if he does go back into the TV, he at least tries to do his job for a bit before going back in. As he and Walter go to get another balloon, the latter is once again distracted when getting a hot air balloon. They end up at the party, but they crash and the balloon is ruined, making Wanda sad. It's here where Kermit sees a direct consequence to not prioritizing what to do that he goes back to the restaurant. It's a good growing moment for him, and helps to show that friends come first.
He then tells Fozzie about his situation, and he's able to understand. He then gets enough concentration to put the pizzas together and get them to everyone. He even gets to Piggy when spa day is finished. It's his pure will that helps him out. Fozzie then comes in with Walter and Wanda to make this a celebration. Walter also took this as an opportunity to make up with Wanda. It's a pretty good ending due to both parties showing how they have enough self awareness to see that fun is good, but friends come first. I recommend this one.
2. Summer Science Penguin
Writer: Ghia Godfree
Director: Guy Moore
Date: April 23, 2021
Synopsis: "Inspired by Bunsen and Beaker, Summer starts inventing."
I have a hypothesis. Can you be motivated to do science while the watching this episode? I say yes. Let's talk about it. The episode has Summer being inspired by Bunsen and Beaker to take up inventing. She makes Fozzie her assistant, but it's not that easy. This episode has a good moral on how you shouldn't give up. Let's talk about the episode in two halves.
First Half:
We start with Bunsen and Beaker introducing their newest invention, the Tidy Up-inator. As the name implies, this can clean anything. This inspires Summer to make a scientific experiment. Since Fozzie can't get his macaroni to stick to his art without glue, she decides to make something that will make sticky macaroni. He also becomes her assistant. This setup is pretty strong. Summer is someone who's very curious and wants to take in the world around her. As such, it would make sense that she would want to take on science for fun. Fozzie himself is someone who would fit the role of an assistant well given how he's usually someone who will do what he can to help others due to always wanting to be considerate.
We do get to see more of the Tidy Up-inator in a minor plot where they show everyone else how well it can work, liking in cleaning up toys or a pickle parade. Yes really. We then have Summer and Fozzie trying to create sticky macaroni with a mix-up machine and some ingredients. She considers using pizza due to the sticky cheese, but it doesn't work. She tries using gelatin, but that also doesn't work. Those are very strange ingredients when making something sticky, but it fits here. It's essentially silly science, and following more on a child's perspective and less on real life scientific accuracy. As such, it just feels natural.
Second Half:
In a last ditch effort, she decides to use gumballs since they're very sticky. Even that doesn't work. Summer than decides to give up. This is a scene that hits pretty hard. Summer is someone who has a great deal of determination and drive. She's always willing to go the extra mile. The fact that even she gave up is pretty surprising, but not unbelievable considering how this failure is from being unable to help her friends, who she always values.
Things do get pretty interesting at the end of the episode. When Beaker accidentally hits the red button on the Tidy Up-inator, it goes out of control. Summer tries thinking about how to stop it, until she gets the idea to put all of the gumballs into the machine. This actually works, and a giant bubble traps the invention. That's pretty cool, especially with how she's able to move all super quickly to get around the machine. She then decides to combine all the sticky items together and this helps the macaroni stick. Everyone likes her science as a result That's pretty cool.
