It's not often you have non-vampire bats as your main characters for a show. However, if this pilot for The Wonderful Wingits proves anything, it's something to definitely have some more of. Let's talk about it. This pilot focuses on Tim, his older sister Rosy, and their parents, a group of traveling performers. Tim tries to make himself stand out with a performance, but accidentally provokes a group of tiny, mischievous creatures, and breaks Iris's leg. He's then told to take her place during a play, which doesn't bode well for both since he gets too scared and she feels he cheated her out of this performance. She then tries to sabotage him .

The main message of this pilot is all about being there for each other even when it's not easy. The dynamic that Tim and Iris have is what helps make this work.

Tim and Iris have a dynamic that's as opposite as night and day. Tim is wide eyed, idealistic, helpful, and wants to make himself more known. However, he's also incredibly immature and not easy to keep him in line. Most notably, at the beginning, he's told to make his presence known in some way, so he just starts making some noises and disturbs the tiny creatures. He's actually quite determined to make sure the show goes on. It's just that he's piling on too much for himself to do against his better judgement. Iris is the opposite. She's shown to be very cynical and self centered. She worked hard to take part in this play, and having Tim basically steal her spotlight doesn't sit well with her. She resorts to sabotage to get him to quit. She also thinks he's lying just to get into the spotlight. Despite this, she does care for him. During the play, she shines a spotlight on the ceiling and sees the creatures, realizing he was telling the truth. She then tries to protect even if she can't stop showing her ego.

As for the other characters, they're still fun. The dad is generally caring, but doesn't have much of a spine. The mother is really about the spotlight, sometimes more than her kids, but she's not neglectful. The actors themselves also do have some nice bonding moments.

The ending is quite nice. While fending off the creatures, they put on a show filled with spectacle that the audience likes. They get covered in slime by the creatures. Seeing this, the creatures decide to join their performance group if they can throw slime at Tim. Yeah, it's a little cruel, but they at least put on a good performance. I do like the whole thespian angle here. It gives this much more liveliness. I recommend it.
