Description
"XO," I say, thanks for coming to visit in person.
"Technically not your XO at the moment - "
"You will always be the XO," I interrupt.Ā "I met your old DI on Deneb."
"The Sergeant Major?" she says, brightening up.Ā "How is she?"
"More amazing than you described her," I tell her.Ā "She saved me."Ā Looking at Nadia, I admire her ponytail.Ā Like Vanessa'sĀ I want one like that.Ā I may not be a super esper but my skills are not wanting.Ā Ā I have my hair grow several centimeters.Ā Nadia hands me a scrunchy.Ā Like she knew.
"My new orders have me here," she tells me, "but why did you want to see me?"
"I miss her."
"Who her?Ā Nine?"
"Goddess, no."
"I'm not going to read your mind," she tells me. "Unless you want me to."
"Not like I could stop you."
"I wouldn't do that, Nat," she reminds me.Ā "You know that."
"Monica," I admit.Ā "You know when I last saw her, I didn't salute her like her GMH* required."
"And you're surprised?" she says.Ā "You know she doesn't care about those things."
"I fucked up," I say.Ā "I want her back.Ā Except - "
"The Empyrean One?"
"Kind of hard to compete with all that hair."
Nad laughs.Ā She doesn't do that often.Ā I like it.Ā And I giver her a hug.Ā "Thank you."
"I didn't do anything."
"You treated me with friendship and respect."
"Which you have long since earned, Nat."
"I want to win her back."
"Talk to Monica then," she counsels me.Ā "Do not confront Keisha.Ā You won't win."
"Could you?"
"I don't think Prime could."
"I think I'll talk to Monica then."Ā I look at her, realizing something.Ā "You never told me what your orders were."
"Classified until I ship out," she says. "I'll get word to you."
Kissing her on the forehead, I tell her I love her - in a sisterly way.Ā "Wish me luck."
