Ed really is not thinking forward the -whole- way...he's comparing himself with his father without being a father himself...which makes the situation a bit different.

So at this moment, he doesn't seem to be ready for fathership, but hey, they even don't really have a full blown love relation going on... so things will change over time

The trip Ed mentions is the one you see them leaving for on the end of the manga and FMA brotherhood: Al goes to Xing and further, Ed goes West because he cannot cross the desert with his automail leg. By the way: you'll see May visiting on the next page, she went trough the desert again, but there are trade routes now (in my imaginary fma world ^^). It's still a perilous job to do, that's why the governments are negotiating over a train-road, but that road will only exist after Ed and Al left (that way May can visit more ^^) (that's in the last manga chapter by the way)

For the ones that forgot: Ed an Al's father is basically kept alive by being a philosopher stone: his body is a vessel for a huge number of souls of the destroyed city of Xerxes, thanks to 'dwarf in the flask'/'father'. So basically, he's not like a normal human being any more.
He leaves Ed, Al and their mother behind because he suspects 'father' is planning something but in my opinion also because he doesn't age and doesn't know how to handle staying at his loved ones while they're getting older (and eventually die) + the danger that people might suspect immortality and threaten him and his beloved family. Or something like that. Meh, my own fantasy and the canon stuff are getting mixed up in my head but I don't care right now

This scene is also meant to let Ed realize he and his brother won't necessarily be together in their futures and that Al doesn't mind, their bond might change a bit but it will still stay strong. And that Al supports his feelings for Winry ^^ (I somewhere in my head have some scene where Al alsks Ed about his feelings for her and he eventually confesses, Ed asking if Al is mad about it and stuff like that. But it doesn't fit the comic here, Al knows about it in the last episode, so it's somewhere faaaaar on my todo-list.)

Anyway, these 3 pages show that Ed and Al still are close brothers and share some personal stuff
