Inga:

Phase two of the challenge was in full swing. As the caravan of entrants came closer to the Austrian Alps, the elevation increased and so did the distance between entrants. Some powered through at the front, while others staggered behind at the very back. As if the steep slopes weren’t enough, snowfall every day lowered the visibility, making it hard to keep on the right path and see other groups of entrants. A lot of the entrants likely realized it would only get more challenging from here and some were undoubtedly considering dropping out. Only time would tell how many did in the end. Luckily, there was a 2-day break in Obertauern, giving everyone a chance to rest up and get caught up with the others in case they had found themselves at the tail end of the caravan.

Inga had been going strong so far, though not without her own challenges. And now, she found herself restless, itching to continue onwards. However, reason would have her stay with everyone else in Obertauern. After some rest, she itched to venture outside again and decided to go tend to General Oberst, her Phase 2 steed. Grabbing a halter on the way, she walked through town, taking in the sights with Agni at her side. Her eyes wandered over the landscape, the buildings, the view. Finally, they landed on where she was headed and - oh god. In front of her, a guy with a microphone was seemingly interviewing two women and a camera person filming it all…And there was no way she wasn’t in shot too. She stopped dead in her tracks and froze, her head churning about what to do. As if her body decided for her, she ducked and turned, keeping an eye on the interview as she quickly left the scene. On the way out of there, she glanced back again, catching the interviewer spotting her leaving. Shit. She picked up the speed and scurried to hide around the corner of a building nearby, Agni following her closely. Her heart pumped slightly in her ears as she listened attentively for whether or not anyone had followed her to interview her next. She sure hoped not.

Amery:

Amery was exhausted, these past few days had been rough, pushing him to the extremes of discomfort he’d never known before. Of course he knew it would be this way… deep…deep down, he knew. There is a huge difference between the scenic treks he took on often, and a whole month of unending suffering in the snow.

He missed his laptop..his home, his dog, hot showers, and Endgame. And his friends at home.

After a while of much needed rest, he was again outside where all the action was. Despite still being a few moments from collapsing….and that was only a little bit overdramatic…like 50% overdramatic. Being around people and their energy was a necessary resource for his extroverted soul. Despite this, he found himself sitting on a fencepost watching instead of partaking. He could see the interviews taking place just several yards away. Usually, he would take great joy in involving himself in that, probably to the extent of becoming a nuisance inserting himself into other people’s interviews.

Instead he was waiting for a less intense interaction, he couldnt guarantee being able to keep up with an interview at the moment.

As he watched from afar, he noticed a brown-coated figure march towards the interview on a mission. Only, they stopped as soon as they neared it like they had just realised what they were doing. Amery raised a brow and smiled as the figure appeared to panic, turning away and trying to act natural. She quickly turned the corner of the building in front of him, seemingly hiding.

Amery chuckled deviously as he jumped down from the fence and headed over. Naturally, the impulse to talk to someone who looked like they really didnt want to be talked to was too great for Amery to resist.

He had closed the distance before he’d noticed the dark furred canine following her trail. He paused hesitantly before smiling as the woman inevitably noticed him there. “Didnt fancy an interview huh, nothing to say?” He blurted out, swinging his arms absentmindedly as he decided not to encroach on her personal space. Yet.

___

A few seconds passed and…no sounds of footsteps coming in her direction. She seemed to be in the clear and took a breath of relief. An interview was high on the list of things she wouldn’t be caught dead engaging in. And what would she even say? That she had come with two green horses despite her better judgement? That she had had more than a few unfortunate incidents so far and had to admit taking Ranec might not have been the best idea? Yeah, no way. There were plenty of other entrants they could interview that wasn’t her.
Her moment of standing there in peace didn’t last long, interview or not. Suddenly, Agni tensed and pressed on her leg, a deep rumbling, barely audibly, forming in her throat. Then Inga looked up and almost jumped.

“CHRIST,“ She breathed sharply out, and took a few seconds glaring at the white-haired guy, who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere,  “No, and I don’t like being snuck up on either” Had he seen her scurry away to hide? And what the hell did he want? She straightened and looked him up and down, unimpressed with what she saw. Clearly, by the looks of him, he hadn’t taken the possibility of faceplanting in the snow and blending in too much for people to find him, seriously.

___

Amery blinked at the woman as she snapped at him. Damn! Forget the dog, maybe the human bites too! He smiled brightly at her “I don’t think anyone does!” He stated with a chuckle.

“Cute dog, can i pet it?” He asked obnoxiously, even though he already knew the answer. The dark canine looked like something out of his nightmares. His tiny white Pomeranian, Beast, was much more his kind of dog. Probably much softer, and fluffier, and so friendly. Man, he missed his dog.

“What breed is it?” His mind continued racing onwards and he didnt bother putting on the brakes.

___

Inga glanced subtly around to make sure the microphone-holding person hunting entrants down for interviews still wasn’t coming their way. Sure enough, they were nowhere to be seen. Her attention snapped back to the guy in white and salmon as he spoke again. She crossed her arms and stared him down, still feeling huffy about being snuck up on and kicking herself a bit for not hearing him coming.

When he asked about petting Agni, she blinked a few times and then glanced down at her travel companion. The canine in question appeared to be in as foul mood as her; a sliver of her teeth showing, a low rumbling coming from her throat, a line down her back where the hackles had risen slightly and a stand-offish position between Inga and the guy, made that very clear. Did this guy just have zero survival instincts? So far, that was the vibe she got from him and her eye twitched slightly at the thought.

“No, you may not,” She eventually said in a sharp tone, and continued in a half mumble “Not if you want your hand bit off” It would be a lie to say Inga wasn’t sometimes tempted to let Agni have a go when people pissed her off. But it would only cause a scene, and she didn’t want to face the potential consequences from that. Thus, it was better to say no, and whether people listened or not was their problem, not hers.

“She’s a mutt,” Inga answered dryly, and made a move to get going again, taking a few steps around the guy to continue on a detour towards where General Oberst was held in case the interview was still happening in the direction she came from.

___

“Oooh a spicy dog, I can respect that.” He nodded and began to walk as the stranger did. He followed her without saying anything for a few moments. “Where are you going?” He wondered with a smile, ignoring the clear ‘leave me alone’ signals both the human and canine were radiating.

Everyone warmed up to him eventually, he just had to wear them down first. Well, apart from Austin, but he’s sure they were still… friends. Despite the death threats. He clicked his tongue as he looked at the woman. She seems like she’d be that kind of friend. The one that acts like his presence has ruined their day, but likes him…deep…deep down.

Definitely friend material, just needs some work.

Not like he’s ever thought someone wasn't.

___

She let out a snort and swiftly kept walking, expecting this stranger to leave her alone now. Only…the sound of crunching in the snow behind her would suggest otherwise. Oh god hopefully, he just happened to need to go in the same direction as her. But no, he was definitely following her. Suddenly, he asked her a question and she stopped dead in her tracks, gripping the halter in her hand tighter. Her eyes narrowed at him as she stared him down for a few beats. Agni hard sideeyed him too, hackles still prominent on her back.

“What are you doing?” She finally asked annoyed, completely brushing over his question. The idea of this guy keeping her company while she checked on General Oberst wasn’t appealing in the slightest, so she sure as hell wasn’t going to let him in on her plans.

___

Amery stopped as the woman span around and stared at him with narrowed eyes. Clearly, he was hitting a nerve. While he was fully convinced he could eventually crack through this cold facade, it was a delicate operation.

He stepped back, giving her more space.

“Oh, just curious.” He smiled with a hint of awkwardness as his brain worked double time, trying to think of a reason that didnt sound odd. Well, he was being odd, so maybe there was no point hiding that. “Oh, you looked lonely, so I thought you could do with some company.” He smiled brightly, fully aware that wasn’t the best thing to say.

___

Inga kept her piercing stare at him, watching him very closely. He kept his distance and whether it was to give her space or because he had an ounce of survival instinct in him yet, it put her a bit more at ease. But the suspicious stare stayed on him as he spoke again. Then he hit her with the next sentence and she about lost it. By the way she looked at him, there was no doubt the word “lonely” hit a nerve. And Agni’s rumbling increased in tandem with her rising anger.

“Well, I’m not, so find someone else to bother,” She scoffed. This was not the day to be messing around, but when was it ever with her.

“Don’t follow me, “ She commanded sharply as she turned on her heel and stomped off with Agni following closely behind. Lonely? Pfff, how would he know?
Of all the eggshells he could have accidentally walked on, he had somehow managed to hit one of the more delicate ones. Her years of solitude had definitely left a mark and it would be a lie to say she didn’t feel deeply lonely sometimes. Sometimes was an understatement, really. And she would most likely never admit that to anyone, much less a stranger. Instead, she would brood for herself, by herself while pushing those feelings down before they festered as they had time and time again in the past. Getting to General Oberst couldn’t happen fast enough.

___

Amery was known for being hopelessly oblivious to other people’s thoughts and feelings, but the look that the other gave him made it hard to miss. He grit his teeth awkwardly as she snapped at him. Oops.

He opened his mouth to say something when she demanded he didnt follow her and stormed off. Well….

He didnt follow, he did have some survival instincts after all. But he made a mental note to keep an eye out for the prickly stranger at a later date. Clearly him being her friend would do wonders for her attitude, everyone always perks up when blessed by his presence.

He smiled to himself before strolling away back towards the interview area.

Word count: idk LMAO
