Phinn is my favorite hero in Vainglory, a MOBA game I play with my fiancee all the time, so naturally I jumped at the opportunity of building on Sugar Venom's Bakuto Phinn lore and adding an alternate fate of the Storm Queen to it, in which she is the Squall Queen, a powerful Queen who rides Phinn and has two sea dragons she hatched in the churning, boiling heat beneath Boiling Bay.

This plaque was painted on a piece of scrap wood I found outside and cleaned up. I painted all three plaques in a day when I found out about the competition, which was my first experience with speed painting. One of the things I love about painting scrap wood, despite the difficulties of painting on an often uneven surface that may be more or less absorbent depending on the area, is that it creates a beautiful texture. I love the corner with the burn and the missing wood, and I love the gnarls and knots in the wood that the paint can't hide. I used a brass bolt and chain to bolt the wood together for added strength and stability, and to imitate the heavy chain that Phinn uses to drag the enemy team towards him!

I didn't win the competition and was told this was because it wasn't a true comic, but they did feature my illustrated short story on Vainglory's Twitter page!
