So the idea of God himself, incarnating in a lowly, frail human body and dying a horrific death to save you from your sins turned you into an atheist? No, I do not get that.
I have heard the whole "cherrypick" argument a million times. It fails because it is based upon fallible, terribly intellectually limited humans arrogantly judging the decisions of an eternal, all-knowing and yes, holy God.
I wish you well on your path towards eternity.

Translating... Translation complete!Β Here's what you meant to say:
"I've read the Bible without studying it and threw a temper tantrum at the parts I hated. That's why I'm an atheist. Brought to you by the Anti-Scholarship Society."

My only question to you is, why are all the tags for this image "Christianity" "Christians" "Catholic" etc when you are clearly posting a image for atheist?

Sometimes, you should study ALL religion. If neither of them is good, be an atheist.

Well, you can have other religions. There isn't just Judaism and Christianity. I'm quite keen on the flying spaghetti monster.

You interpreted it in your own way. You did not read it or study it for what is truly there.

Wow. Well to each their own. We all have our beliefs and a civil person will respect that. Don't you agree?

No. Not every belief is worthy of respect. People are worthy of basic respect, but the shit some of them believe, no. When we can't can't do anything about climate change/global warming because some religious zealots believe it is 'the end of times' and 'gods wil'l, what is there to respect? Some of the worst, most inefeective people in congress do nothing to help and more to hinder our progress because of their religious beliefs. Take a close look at Senator Inhofe for an example, and every tea bag republican for further clarification.
So no, not every 'belief' is worthy of respect. If that were true, we should also respect the beliefs of the Nazis.
The difference here is knowing which beliefs are worth respecting. Using critical thinking skils it is possible to discern the difference. And if you want to learn how to practice critical thinking skills, there are many useful courses freely available.
Peace.

I suppose I should have been more clear as to what I meant by my comment. True that there are those out there that take their beliefs too far. Btu that is true not only in religion but in social, economic, and other aspects of human nature. IF what they are doing is morally and ethically wrong then no we don't have to respect their beliefs, but if what they are doing is something that helps the people around them become better human beings then we should.
Now I'm not saying that I'm a religious expert by and definition of the word, but from what I have been able to learn from the various beliefs across the world, most of them encourage their followers to be kind, respectful, moral, and upright citizens.
To take the extremist of one organization and use that as the standard of what the rest of them are like is just as narrow minded. It's how we treat each other that will separate us from those that use a certain doctrine to their own personal use to put down others.
So what I meant to say is if what they believe and practice is a positive and uplifting thing for society and it encourages others to do the same then we should respect their beliefs.

Then we agree, pretty much. Well said.
I respect positive, uplifting beliefs that make people better people. Having said that, I think religion as a whole is doing more harm than good these days. It keeps people ignorant, even if they are nice.

I should respect you as a person, absolutely, as well as respect your right to hold religious beliefs... But if you believe in supernatural entities that actively concern themselves with how I live my life, what exactly is there in that to respect?
It seems to me that there is really only one thing the religious believer wants to see change in my behavior:Β a cessation in criticism of his or her religious beliefs. "Respect my religious beliefs" is little more than a demand for silence. It is about silencing dissent and criticism. It is a request that I no longer exercise my right to free expression when it comes to the religious beliefs in question. The believer who demands respect for his or her religious beliefs is demanding that the rest of us grant him or her the privilege not to have these beliefs critically examined.
I strive to respect people, their rights, and their freedom. I may go so far as to say that I will try to respect a persons right to his or her beliefs, even though I've never been particularly confident that such a statement is meaningful. WhatΒ I will not respectΒ are the beliefs themselves. Some beliefs do not deserve respect and cannot reasonable command it.Β

There's a world of difference between permitting/tolerating a belief and respecting that belief. Unfortunately we live in a world filled with people who can't understand the concept of tolerating beliefs you dislike or think are absurd - because any belief they don't care for they want to ban, shout down etc.

Lol no, this is explaining how I and many other people came to be an atheist, however, many atheist have come to their way of thinking from different experiences, exposures, etc. Β
But yes many Christians have not read the Bible.

Yep, I'm now thankfully going to a public school, but still I live next to the Bible belt, where basically everyone is a Christian, I was talking to a fellow Atheist, and we started to talking about how we came to be Atheist and half of the class started yelling at us, telling us we are going to hell and yada yada. Also I'm regularly bullied and harassed by a Christian club for being gay/atheist, but I reported them so we'll see how that goes.

Its very weird how people get angry when you tell them that you are an atheist, technically everyone is an atheist, for example if you are a christian then you are an atheist towards the Hindu gods, its just atheist have a lack of belief towards every god(s).Β
