Description "Well, of all things, can it be really? Yes no oh hi oh my eye, my mind may be wandering, but I confess, I believe it is Old Deuteronomy."
~Old Deuteronomy, Cats (from munkustrap's duet with the Rum Tum Tugger.)

EDIT - is this in the right category? Technically the Cats are anthro...but also technically not. Help? Also, recontrasted. Mmm, pretty.

So, I've been neglecting you guys. And this site, really. I still have more than 1, 800 deviations to sort through. God help me.

Anyway, back to the point. I redid my drawing of Munkustrap [link] (played by Michael Gruber in the film) because I looked at the original one I drew and thought "Jeez, I was proud of this?!" you know, and I just had to redo it. And I feel I've done much better, actually - for example, the wig doesn't look fake and flat, the chin has some shading (to define the lip and the start of the chin) and the black background adds something, in my honest opinion.

So, I feel I've come rather a long way in only a year and a month (ish). Wow!

Oh, and the spottiness of the background is due to the scanner's fail, it isn't like that in real life. And the random lighter patch at the top left (by his ear) is due to the fact I started to draw the background in in graphite then thinking "Hey wait, it'll be too shiny!" so I changed it. But unfortunately the coloured pencil wouldn't cover the graphite, ah well.

Anyway, onto the actual concept of the drawing - I kind of changed a couple of bits from the ref for effect. For example, I made his wig more shiny and hair-like - because if I hadn't've, it would have remained flat and unrealistic like my previous attempt; however, I do think it added something so it's going to stay like that. I also changed the shading minutely so the white was less so, and the darks were darker, for more contrast. Also I made the different parts of his make-up more obvious. So, all in all, a success, I think.

Oh, and I am obsessed with Cats at the moment. Best. Musical. EVER. (along with The Producers.) Michael Gruber is the best Munkustrap.

Enjoy!

Munkustrap!
Hurray for Cats (and I'm a dog lover),but it's my fave musical and this is such a great tribute. Munk is probably the most noticeable of all the male cats because of the stark contrast of his mane, and costume. You've caught it beautifully here.Michael Gruber is who I've seen on the DVD.

Yeah, I suppose so - people tend not to read the artist's comments though which annoys me. And I dislike fave and running - it's understandable if the artist doesn't reply but it's nice to make an effort

Very nice, with that realism and detail and shading and all.

I have to disagree about the best Munkustrap, though:
I saw CATS live an year ago with Finnish actor Tuukka LeppΓ€nen as Munkustrap, and he was the best. Totally. But that's just my odd opinion that maybe two Finns or so share with me.

Oh, awesome, well I will never see it so I will have to take your word for it. I haven't actually seen any Cats other than the DVD version, but I have looked on the internet for videos and in my mind Michael Gruber will always be Munkustrap.
Same concept with Doctor Who, if you follow it.

This is exactly why I wanted to send the paper to you- you have a much better use for it. : )

I like the description of this piece as it highlights something very rare, yet easy to see, about photo-realism and that is that sometimes you need to overemphasise something- in this case the hair- to make it look more realistic.
Because as you said yourself, it would've come out flat and less realistic otherwise.
Nice observation and generally a lovely piece. Your style has started to show through a little more prominently, while technically you have grown as an artist.
I particularly like the way the face has depth and form and looks real, tangible and like it has weight in three-dimensional space. Particularly around the eyes, they can be often very unimpressive but you have rightly highlighted them as a pinnacle facial feature.

Excellently done.

SoLong-AndGoodnight In reply to EtherealMog [2009-12-21 01:27:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, muchly.

And yeah, the idea was that it was kind of a unique take and more how I see the cats as if they were really like that and not actors in makeup. Part of the reason I liked this ref was the dramatic lighting particularly on the right eye, which was in shadow, which came out a bit badly on the scan, but looks quite effective irl.
Thanks again!

EtherealMog In reply to SoLong-AndGoodnight [2009-12-23 21:58:22 +0000 UTC]

You're most welcome, m'dear.

I like that outlook. I love it when someone goes to the effort to show how the art looks to them, not just "Oh, it's drawn like this, so I have to." but more "I see it this way and that should be like this."
It's refreshing. And really shines in this piece.
Damn scanners. I wish they'd invent something a little better to produce images from traditional art.
I still think it looks good. I just know what it's like when it's better in real life than on a scan. :/
