The way Project horizons ended, I'm surprised anyone is still making art about it. Horrible, horrible ending.

I personally really liked project horizons all the way through, everything I've attempted to read since PH just hasn't gotten my attention like it did.

I hated the ending. Blackjack threw away everything she had learned in 70 chapters, all the good characters were wasted in the ending and the whole thing turned into a lesbian sex fiction with Little Pip in the prolog. It was very clear that Somber just stopped listening to his editors and rushed out the last few chapters so he could just be done with it. None of the ending makes sense.

Spoilers below this point!

There was no reason to kill off the main characters and in a world based on the idea that friendship is magic, Somber just had Blackjack solve everything on her own with a shot-gun. Literally, everything that happened from the time she left the stable till the final battle could have been skipped. She could have walked out of the stable, walked to the core and used a shotgun to defeat the big-bad. The ending made the bulk of the story totally pointless. She learned nothing, accomplished nothing, forgot everyone she loved, regressed to the person she was before she even left the stable forgetting everything she had learned and abandoned every one of her friends and family that survived.

Imagine if other things ended like PH ended.

Star Wars: The Rebels fought a long, deadly battle to get the plans for the Death-Star and waged a massive battle where Han, Chewy, Leigha, Ben, 3-CPO, and the Ewocks all died then Luke realized he could just use the force and make the death star explode with his brain.

Breaking bad: Walter White's entire family except for his son dies, then Walter takes a gun and shoots the drug lord who killed everyone he loved and runs off to Canada to live a secret life letting his son think he is dead.

The ending of Project Horizons can be summed up as "Fuck friendship, I'm a Alicorn bitches!"

Quite a few times Somber has stated that he knew how the story would end when he started writing it. The ending wasn't just thrown together last minute, but his original intention from the beginning of the story. My guess as to the point of so many characters dying off is to add a bit of realism/actual risk into the story. I do love the original, but when you think about it saving the entire wasteland while only losing one friend like Pip did is a bit absurd. Also, the end is actually one of the major reasons I enjoyed PH as much as I did. In the original the ending didn't feel like it gave proper closure to the characters, and I felt was a very sad note to go out on. In PH I was actually happy to know what had become of Pip and Blackjack, and know it wasn't some horrible fate being eternally trapped in a weather control device.

Regardless all of this is just based on opinion. Some people hate Somber's writing style while others praise it. I'm not here to cause any arguments, just to post random colorful horses.

Oh, I agree, it should have been dangerous when she went to face the final boss or went to chase down Cog and meet Tom. What I think was a total disconnect from what Blackjack would have done vs what Somber just shat out without thinking about anything, was the fact she took the ponies she cared most about in life, fought her way through an insane cyber-army, shoved them in a rocket and sent them to the moon on what was almost guaranteed to be a one-way trip. Blackjack the character would have never let her friends come on that journey with her. She would have taken strangers or went alone, but she would have never, ever let her friends come with her. (except for Rampage because... Rampage.)

Blackjack the character would never have thrown away her friends lives like that. Somber the writer abandoned everything that had been established about Blackjack the character, everything she had learned, every thing that made her grow and become a better pony, and instead of thinking, "what would Blackjack do?" or "what would P-21 do here?" he treated the characters like they were two dimensional characters in a video game.

He threw away everything that had made Blackjack a developed character in favor of turning her into Cyberjack the marry sue, super-hero.
That is why he is a failed writer. That is why he will always fail as a writer because he doesn't understand the very basics of what it is to be a writer. He writes like he's never taken a writing class or even read anything about writing. If he has, he would have known better than to end the story like he did. Blackjack would have made her friends stay behind, P-21 would have agreed because he has a daughter to think about. There was no way in hell any father, would let his barely teenage daughter climb into a rocket on a suicide mission to the moon.
