Description
"Hush, just listen. There is no greater music than silence. Songs come from the thoughts that you create, and they're all born from silence. Listen to your surroundings, melodies become louder. Just hush baby girl." I whispered to my father's grave. A tear rolled down my cheek as I closed my eyes. The clouds had started to roll in and it had gotten darker. I stared at the carving which read 'Daren Selvere 1972 – 2011 Age 39'. I tried to fight back the tears, but it was no use. A rain drop had fell on my face. I looked up at the darkened sky, as the rain started to pour. I didn't feel like getting up, I just wanted to stay. I closed my eyes, and let the rain hide my tears. It started to get late, but I refused to move. I heard someone walking up behind me, I didn't feel like turning around. My sister knelt down next to me, holding an umbrella.
"I thought I'd find you here." She said. I didn't say anything.
"You're soaked." She mentioned as she put the umbrella over my head. I was still silent. I couldn't find anything to say. She moved closer to me so she could fit under the umbrella too.
"You know, he wouldn't want you to be doing this to yourself. Your shutting us out, and not just us, some of your friends too. I'm worried about you sis." She explained, as she took off her jacket and wrapped it around me. I hadn't noticed I was shivering. I put my head on her shoulder. She put her arm around me and tried to comfort me. I knew she was hurt too, but she hid it so well.
"I'm sorry." I managed to say through chattering teeth.
"No, don't be sorry." She squeezed me a little. I thought she was crying, but it was hard to tell in the rain. I looked down at the grass.
"Come on, let's go home. Mom's got dinner ready, and you need to warm up." She said as she stood me up. Her arm was still around me as we walked home.
"I like the rain." I said, as we walked in the driveway.
"Yeah, I bet you do." She giggled. I smiled slightly.
"I do too, when it's not below freezing outside." She opened the door and let me in first. The shivering had went away, since I was too cold to shiver anymore. The freezing had started to set in on my hands, and sunk into my skin.
"Lacey! Where were you!" My mother yelled. I tried to say something but Clair interrupted.
"Mom, it's okay, she was at dad's grave." She tried to stick up for me.
"You're soaked. Sweetie why didn't you just come home when you knew it was about to rain?" She asked. I didn't know what to say.
"Here." She said as she took off the drenched jacket.
"Wait here, I'll get you both towels." She ran upstairs. Clair was dripping wet, but she was drier than I was. She had started to shiver. I looked up at her. She had dark chestnut brown hair, always straight. Her eyes were a pale grey, but warm. Her face seemed perfect, no flaws. She was beautiful, and sometimes I envied her. People used to think we were twins, but we looked nothing alike. My hair was blonde, slightly curly, and my eyes were pale blue. I looked more like my dad, while Clair looked more like mom. I was slightly pale, and I never thought of myself as beautiful. Mom came back downstairs with two towels. She handed one to both of us, and told us to come in out of the porch.
"I'll get the fireplace going, then you two warm up, and Lacey, no more of this. I want you home on time from now on okay?" She asked, giving me a stern look.
"Okay." I replied.
"We'll have a talk later." She mentioned, still looking at me. I just nodded. Clair glanced at me for a second, then ran upstairs to change out of her soaked cloths. I followed behind her up the stairs to my room. I put on my pyjamas, and dried my hair with the towel. I tried to brush my hair but through my curls it was useless. I headed back downstairs. Clair was sitting in front of the fireplace in the living room, I sat down next to her. Mother came in with some hot chocolate.
"Dinner is ready if you're hungry. It's getting cold." She said as she handed me the mug.
"I don't really have much of an appetite right now, but thanks mom." I really wasn't hungry, and I was too comfortable to get up. She sighed as she walked away. I guess she was a little annoyed at how she had made dinner just to waste it. Clair got up to go eat with mother. I still sat in front of the fireplace. My arm had started to burn a little, but I was in no mood to feel pain. I stared at the flames as they hugged the wood. The warmth wrapped around my body, comforting me. All I could think about was the accident. Why did it happen to me, my father? What did we do to deserve that? I fought back the tears, I didn't want to cry again. My eyes focused on the wood, red from the fire. It looked so beautiful, yet so harmful at the same time, cutting the wood, and digging it's sharp blades into the bark as it roared with rage, and leaving nothing but ashes. I looked down at the floor, my eyes burned from staring at the flames. I stood up, and walked into the dining room. Mom and Clair were still eating. I sat down in a chair and took a sip of my hot chocolate. No one spoke. It was quiet for a while, but the silence became unbearable.
"School starts in another week." I quickly thought of something to break the quiet.
"Yeah, grade eleven huh." Clair caught on. Mom still never said a word.
"You excited?" My sister asked.
"A little, but I don't know."
"Well, I was excited. I was no longer a freshman." She smiled. I returned the smile and took another sip of hot chocolate.
