Description English assignment, we had to illustrate the island of Lord of the flies as either
i) the island in its entirety. ie. a map
ii) the island how Jack sees it (hellsish)
iii) the island as Simon sees it (paradisial)

I chose the last. Simon's awesome. He's my favourite character.

Materials- Crayola watercolours on sketchbook paper. (+photoshop 7 for prepping)
Time- 3-4 hours sketch to watermark
Art-Me
Lord of the Flies and associated intellectual property- William Golding

-EDIT-

I've realized that Simon has black hair. I watched a documentary in which he had blonde hair. Opps. The necessary changes have been made to original (as to comply with being accurate to the novel. English class. e_e) All the same I will keep the blonde version here. I like it better.

While I am here I'd also like to say that there will be others on the way for you see I misunderstood the assignment. I have to do representions of the entire island....so more scenes of say the clearing...the beatch..the fruit orchard...etc will later be posted. Seeing as my heart will not be in them they'll probobly end up half-assed, so don't forget to check the scraps!

Would you consider letting me use this in my PowerPoint for AP Lit? I'd give due credit, of course.

This is seriously AMAZING. I am doing an illustration of Simon for English class too, but it could never compare with this. The unusual perspective makes it really interesting. Simon is my favorite character. He is the only one who knows the truth about the beast. But then he gets killed! Poor simon.

i love this picture, its so beautiful. i loved simon too, he was just awsome.
concerning the assignment, it seems to me that jack sees the island more as freedom than hell. nothing you, just wanted to say.

oh yeah Soma..not saying this as a means of like, 'you did it wrong' i love your picture sooo much...but i thuoght i was going crazy, so i asked my english teacher, and she said,

Teahcer: 'no simon has black hair..which is weird. i thuoght he'd have blonde.'

and i said,
me: 'why yes! me too!'

and she said,

teacher: 'they portrayed him with blonde hair in the movie..so thats probably what you're thinking of.'

so please don't take that as 'you did your visual wrong! go change it!' becasuse i would never say that..i just thought i'd poiunt it out so that i don't get confused agan..and turn myself into the waterford.

actually I talked to my english teach too. When I found out he has had black hair, I changed it on the compy I'm going to pass in. However, since I like the blonde version better ( and since my internet just came back on) I kept the blonde version here.

Yeah no worries.

Waaa, Simon! My most favoritests of favorites! I love the way you did the over head leaves. And how I thought Simon was a tree for just a second. He looks like part of the whole thing, instead of just being there in it. I kind of feel like the really defined flowers on the tree behind him on the right are a little distracting, since none of the others have that really hard edge. My eye keeps getting stuck on it.

Yes I thought of that too, and was wondering if it was just me. Thank you for the encouraging comment! ^_^

Well, as soon as I saw the title, I realized the point of the picture, before having read the description... so, I'd say mission accomplished!

So what have we learned today?

Watercolor over-rules digital media. Well, in your case at least.

Prespective and light through the trees just made this one.

But he has no nipples.

Ill take that as a compliment. Its funny. I use the cg techniques in watercolour. They look better.

yes the perspective was my favourite part as well. Kathleen was oogling over the light beams.

nipples are ugly.

Thank you.
