Good Lord, this photograph speaks to me in a silent language I cannot express, but can feel in the very marrow of my bones.

Right now everything I do is within a 20-mile radius of where I live, so basically the area covered by the tip of the marker in this pic: sta.sh/0286iy74wdva

SALEM?! As in, Salem witch hunts??

Alas, no. Salem is the capital of Oregon and about 80mi/130km from where I live. The witch hunts were in Salem, Massachusetts, about 3,200mi/5,100km away. Never been there myself, but I'd like to go sometime.

Ah, I see. Never been good at geography! One of the most memorable plays I read in high school was The Crucible by Arthur Miller... it just stuck with me.

Understood. There's a lot of good New England lit influenced by that Puritanical background. Nathaniel Hawthorne makes for great reading. A lot of Lovecraft's work is set there. I'm not all that fond of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" myself but it's one that a lot of people enjoy and recommend. Jason Brown's Why the Devil Chose New England for His Work is an interesting collection of short stories all set in the same fictional town; if you like modern American MFA-style writing, I hear it's good; I wasn't too keen on it, though I liked the basic premise and what (I think) the author was trying to say with it.

Actually I've heard bad things about 'the lottery'! I'll try looking for the other recommendations Thank you so much
