This is my favorite of your photos thus far. I love the gowns and the background lends a nice period atmosphere. What and where is the old stone building in the background?

Of all your costumes I think this is my favorite thus far you have created. There is so much to like about this photograph. The posing, the choice of background, your expressions and exquisite hair styles all first rate and greatly add to the ambiance of the work. Your choice of colors and jewelry accessories greatly enhance the final picture, also. I particularly like the vibrant red of your sleeves as it plays off the light gold and white of the rest of your gown. The white, blue and golden trim on your partner's sleeves is also very beautiful.

You very much look like two beautiful ladies from an English (or French, or Italian, or maybe even Spanish) court. I have the sense that Cyrano de Bergerac will soon stride into the courtyard and regale you two with words of elegance, wit and charm, to do proper homage to your attire and appearance. The only problem with this picture would be deciding which lady is the fairest.

If I could ask one question. Since this work was obviously done by a professional photographer do you have control over the pictures? Or does he only give you permission to publish a few of them? I know hiring a professional photographer is very expensive, especially to have full rights to all his pictures from a particular shoot.

Thank you so much! It's one of my favourite dresses too. I chose the contrasting colours on purpose. As for the photographers, we normally take A LOT of pictures and then they publish the ones that have the best technical aspects to them. We normally only get those published and rarely sent in full size, but sometimes they can send all pics so we can choose, which is what we would love ideally but doesn't happen a lot. We have never hired any photographer, we normally work in terms of collaboration (since what we do is rare, it allows them to show off their skills) also called TFCD (time for CD, or digital copies). So we can't complain much about how we get the pictures since we got them for free This one though, is full size although DeviantArt compressed it a bit, and I love than you can clearly see lots of the details we worked so hard in and our skin looks like skin and not one huge pixel haha.

Thank you for such a detailed answer! Your kindness is greatly appreciated.

If I may ask a few follow up questions, for I am interested in how the photography industry works.

So there is no money that is exchanged, but it sounds like the photographer owns the rights to the prints but allows you to use some at his discretion. I would guess, even those, he technically owns? For example, you couldn't sell this as a print, right? And you would have to pay for the rights to use all his pictures? Also, does he do any artistic editing before he gives you the ones of his choosing? To give an example, who made this photo ( somniumdantis.deviantart.com/a… ) black and white? (Which is also amazing, btw).

Again, forgive my curiosity, but how two artists interact, and collaborates, fascinates me.

You're welcome! And yes, you are right. We can use what they allow us to use and always quoting the photographer. We can not sell any prints either since we didn't take the pictures. However, since most of the ideas/locations for the pics initially were thought by us we have the rights to display them on our websites/profiles because we had some part in the artistic process of all of it... The editing thing really depends on the photographer, some like to do more edition than others so I can't speak for all of them. But yeah, it was the photographer who decided to publish that one in b/n. Hope that helped to some extent

Simply gorgeous, as ever! The dresses fit you so well and everything is so composed that it is simply perfect and real-looking.

May I ask though what the underwear under the camicia of the beige-red dress looks like?

SomniumDantis In reply to Celefindel [2014-09-12 17:00:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! We are both wearing a corset and a muslin chemise. It would have been more correct to wear a kirtle over de chemise and not a corset but I can't be making new underwear for each dress, it's on my to-do list though

Celefindel In reply to SomniumDantis [2014-09-15 20:40:37 +0000 UTC]

How true with the new underwear

What pattern is the corset? Did you use "wired" corsets or the yarn-strengthened version or not wired at all? I'm planning some sort of corset too for my underbust dress but don't know yet which one I should make.Β

SomniumDantis In reply to Celefindel [2014-09-16 13:21:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha yes, almost every period needs different underwear and then it's so much work for something it's not even seen! It's a bit frustrating sometimes... Well I actually cheated a bit and used my Regency corset so it's only some short stays with regular boning. Like this:Β www.fashionsrevisited.com/Rege…
But it does the trick Β

Celefindel In reply to SomniumDantis [2014-09-17 17:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks very much! Of course it fits because those dresses need no stomach pieces

At least this would be not an alteration of a corset I have yet, so maybe I'll make one too

SomniumDantis In reply to Celefindel [2014-09-17 23:11:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes, in fact the kirtles they used with these dresses would have just been slightly longer bodices with a skirt attached, that's why I thought it would work It's all about where the waist falls with each era Good luck if you do start making one! Let me know how it goes!Β
