Description Chapter 5

Fen’s eyes never left the girl’s face as the rays from the sun slowly seeped into the room, spreading out across the distance between them.  A couple of them rested on the girl’s lithe, hourglass form, bringing out a red color that appeared to be highlighted in her raven black hair.  The sun on her pale skin seemed to radiate as she stood silently in the doorway.

The silence was soon broken as she cleared her throat, and Fen instantly snapped out of his trance.

“Ummmm…hello.”  She spoke softly.  She shifted on her bare feet before she took a tentative step towards the bed.  Her eyes, which held the color of a smoky grey, looked guarded.  Fen’s own eyes stayed on her as the sound of her voice came to his ears.  It sounded small and full of apprehension, but it reminded him of the sound of trickling water.

His shoulders relaxed as he suddenly realized that she wasn’t any danger to him.

The girl blinked before giving out a small smile.  She softly walked towards the bed, her form fully immersed in the glow of the sun.  Fen continued to stare at her as she slowly sat at the foot of the bed.

She brushed a lock of her hair behind her ear before her eyes fell on his shoulder.  Fen blinked in confusion before he looked around, trying to find what she was staring at.  He shifted his arms and felt something on his right shoulder.

He looked down and noticed in surprise that a bandage was wrapped securely on his shoulder.  Another stab of realization told him that she was responsible for it.

“You were bleeding….very badly.”  Fen looked up out of the corner of his eye to see the girl looking into his face.  “You had a wound on your shoulder, but I dressed it and wrapped it up for you when you were sleeping.”  A blush crept up into her cheeks as she spoke.  “I…wanted to thank you…for saving me, that is.”  She rubbed the back of her head as she averted her eyes, looking down at the wooden floor.

Fen stared at her hidden face before he gave her a soft smile. She looked up with a confused look before giving him another small smile in return.

Fen shifted on the bed so that his left hand was free from the covers.  Lifting it up he started to unwrap the bandage from his shoulder.

“Ah! No, wait! Wait a minute! I don’t think it’s healed yet!”  The girl spoke in alarm, raising her hands up as if to stop him.  Fen looked up to give her a reassuring smile as he gave one last tug on the bandage.  Finally free, it floated off from his shoulder and landed softly on the bed.

Fen flexed his shoulder as he smirked, feeling completely pleased.  The wound was completely healed, and no scars were evident on his skin.  It was as if there had never been a deadly gash inflicted on his shoulder at all.

He looked up to see a look of amazement on the girl’s face as she stared at his arm.  Her mouth almost hung open as her eyes were wide with disbelief.  He turned his head so that his attention was fully focused on her.

“Wow…”  She lifted her head up and Fen could see surprise all over her face.  “I guess you heal fast.”  She murmured softly.  Fen smiled and slowly nodded, his eyes not leaving hers.

The girl shifted on the bed so that her legs were crossed, her hands placing themselves at her feet.  She looked up at him while a flicker of curiosity danced in her eyes.

“Do you live nearby?  I could walk you over when you’re up to getting home.”  She offered, her voice no longer shy.  Fen stared at her, momentarily enjoying the sound of her voice.  He blinked as a thought came over him.

He was still in a strange world that was unknown to him, and the people in it were completely unfamiliar.

The girl tilted her head as she studied the expression on his face.  “Is that a no….?”  She asked, her eyebrows almost pulled together.  Fen looked back at her and held her gaze, momentarily forgetting about his serious problem.  He noticed how the sun now played across her pale face.  He vaguely noticed that a tint of brown almost stood out in the grey color of her eyes.

She suddenly frowned as she scooted towards him a tad bit closer.  “Hey…what’s wrong?”  She spoke softly.  A worried look came over her face.  “Why won’t you say anything?  Can’t you talk?”  She gently prodded on.

Fen stared as she asked him the direct question before he slowly turned his head away from her, ducking his eyes.  His wolf ears almost drooped slightly at the desire to answer her, and silence spread between them.

He heard a soft intake of breath before he looked out the corner of his eye.  The girl had her mouth covered with her hand along with her eyes full on shock and guilt.  “I’m sorry.”  She whispered behind her hand.  She slowly dropped it as she bit her lower lip. Her eyes turned back towards the floor again.  “I didn’t realize….I didn’t mean to sound insensitive.”  She murmured now, her voice becoming small again.

Fen turned his head back as his eyes took in the girl in front of him, her head bend so that her hair fell over her shoulders and her eyes were masked.

Something twisted inside his chest at the sight and his hand slowly reached out towards her.  It placed itself on one of her small hands, which rested on her foot.

The girl looked down at the touch and saw that his hand covered hers.  She slowly looked up to meet his eyes again, her long bangs falling over her eyes.  She stared up at him before Fen gave a warm smile.  She blinked in surprise but then she smiled softly in return.

The moment was suddenly broken when a loud growl came from Fen’s stomach.

Fen quickly looked down as a blush flashed into his face.  He heard a small laugh come from the girl, and the sound of it consisted of tiny silver bells.  He looked up to see her slid off the bed and head for the door.

“I’ll get us both something to eat.  I’m getting hungry myself.” She said from over her shoulder before she strode out into the hallway.  Fen looked up in time to see her long maroon skirt sway behind her before she disappeared.

He heard hurried footsteps and the clinking of dishes before she came back, balancing two bowls in her hands.  She plopped back onto the bed with a sigh before handing one to him, along with a pair of chopsticks.

“I hope you like fish.” She murmured as she crossed her legs underneath her again.  Fen looked into his bowl and found that it was rice along with a piece of fish that looked rather tasty.  The same spices came to his nostrils again and he began eating.

The girl blinked in surprise as he finished in an instant.  She smiled and then held out her untouched food.  Fen stared at it before his looked into her face.

“It’s OK.  I’ve got plenty more.  I figured you were hungry anyway.”  She spoke softly, her smile still on her face.  Fen stared before he smiled back, letting her place the bowl in his hands.

Both their hands brushed against each other, and Fen noticed how soft her skin was against his.

The girl got up from the bed and stared for the door before she suddenly froze on the spot.  She turned her head towards him.  “I almost forgot.”  She spoke, her voice holding a hint of curiosity.  Fen tilted his head as she hesitated for a moment before she continued.  “Do you have a name?”  She asked her voice now soft.

Fen held her face in his gaze before he started to slowly look around.  The girl blinked before realization came over her face.  She hurried over to her drawer and fished out a blank sheet of paper along with a pencil.  She sat back on the bed and placed them in his hands.

Fen stared at the paper while gripping the pencil in his hand.  When it came to knowing the human language, he only roughly knew the basics of it.  But, as luck would have it, one companion from his small clan from his home world knew of how to speak the language and had taught him a little.

He slowly sketched out the words onto the paper, his eyebrows almost pulled together in concentration as he tried to make it as neat as possible.  The girl leaned by him, staring at the paper with intrigued eyes.

Fen finally straightened up and gently placed the paper on the girl’s lap.  She looked up into his eyes for a moment before she picked the paper up in her hand, her eyebrows coming together as she read the name in crude handwriting.

Fen’s gaze never left her face, and when she finally lifted her eyes he could see the smiling sun flickering in them.

“It’s very nice to meet you, Fen.  My name is Mina.”

Woah yet another update, woo! And poor Fen, he can't talk D:! I don't mean to be rude or anything, but quick question. I remember him growling in a few chapters, so does that mean his vocal cords aren't affected? Or is it that valkyres just can "speak" english?

That's a good question......

Fen can make animalistic noises sometimes (like growlling and purring) but he can't speak words. He's kinda like a mute, but can make hand guestures and make noises of an animal.
