Description “You see everything from the sky,” said Yeva. “Can you tell if winter is going to end soon?”
“You must tell me something first. Anything interesting.”
“I have nothing to say.”
“Then I can’t tell you.”
A puff of frosted breath trailed from Yeva’s mouth as she exhaled slowly. She drew in her thoughts, practicing the words in her head to make sure she could find them. “Alright. Will a story do?”
“I hear many stories.”
“It’s one from far away. Not from anywhere around here.”
“Go ahead,” cawed the crow.
“Alright,” said Yeva. “This was a story from where I was born. There was a deer born near a river, and each day she went to the river and stood in the water from sunrise to sunset. She did this each day for many years. One day an older hind asked her what she was doing. The younger doe said that each day the water in the river moved. So each day when she stood in the river, she was standing in a new part of the river.
“The older deer asked why it mattered if the river was different. The young deer said that one day when she got old, the water she first stepped in when she was a fawn would go back to where she was standing. And by then, she would have seen the whole river. A deer could walk their whole life and never reach the end of the river, but the young deer would see it all without ever having to leave her herd.”
“Is that how it ends?” asked the crow.
“No,” said Yeva. “But I don’t like the ending.”
“Doesn’t matter. Even if you don’t like it you can’t just not say it.”
Yeva sighed. “In the end the other hinds tell the doe that seeing the whole river isn’t important, because it’s still just water they use for drinking. The young hind ignores them, and then gets eaten by a tiger.”
“I like deer stories!” the crow said with a laugh. “The deer they don’t like, always get eaten!”
__________________________________________

A little preview for the next part. Yeva has a conversation with a crow, both to pass the time and to get some information. The story is, of course, a play on the quote by Heraclitus; "You can never step in the same river twice". Of course, deer don't really care much for philosophy. Not that you can blame them. Eating and staying alive is most important above all. There's not really time for anything else.

The reason she's a bit shaggy is because it's winter, and deer to get a shaggy look during the winter months.

It'a always the tigers. Such story crashers they are.

Is it just me, or does that crow seem a little.. I don't know, sadistic. I think you enjoyed that story far to much, my dear crow.

Tigers are always screwing things up!

It makes sense though. Crows get their meals when something else gets dead. So they have to be sadists in some respect, eh?

We need a law enforcement to keep the tigers shenanigans under control!

Indeed. They are supposed to be wise creatures, but they don't make that great of an image for themselves do they?

Aww, and it was such a touching and insightful story too.
Then tigers happened.

I like this crow's face, he enjoys this story so much. Too much.
And for some reason I'm digging the way the scars on Yeva's shoulder are drawn. Maybe cause of the shaggy fur.

Tigers always happen and ruin good stories. Happily ever after? No, they just cut off before the tigers come.

Crows like stories where things die/get eaten.

Wow, the dialogue is great

And the expressions in the picture are perfect. Yeva looks so appropriately displeased.

Yeva is always expressing a look of displeasure. It is her default. Dimitri is trying to fix that.

Everyone loves a sudden Gory ending. Fantastic scene!! ^^ I love the amount of detail, and the composition here. The crow's expression looks fantastic, and fluffy Yeva looks far cuter than she'd probably want to.
