I wonder what would have happened if she left the next day, for good and never told Deadwood? Maybe she would have lived out a normal life with Fen and Rhiker. if onlyΒ

hm... after re-reading this i cant help but wonder why doe* was so dramatic and lied so much to/about rhiker, yet was incredibly honest and only lied twice to fen and not at all to deadwood about fen. from the moment she met fen, she was incredibly blunt and honest with him and deadwood so i dont understand what it is about rhiker that caused her to be so untruthful to/about her.
*i realized her name hadn't been revealed yet lmao

I'd have to take a look back to be able to reference everything but I think it's because of the nature of the lies. Doe's main lie to Fen is about deadwood being her 'crow friend' that she helps take care of. Fen accepts this, never asks to meet the friend, just occasionally references it. Her lie to Rhiker is that, essentially, deadwood is an entire herd of dangerous deer. Rhiker asks about it constantly, wanting to see them and, presumably, join them. Fen doesn't really question the things that the doe does, but Rhiker does. So, the doe has to keep expanding on her lie. Fen is more accepting, Rhiker is more curious.
Fen kind of just discovers the truth about her 'friend' being deadwood, without the doe telling him. But the doe's lack of telling Fen the real truth about deadwood killing part of his herd is a big plot point and turning point in the story.
As for deadwood, when the doe first meets Rhiker deadwood brings up that herds are no good and she needs to remain isolated. But when the doe meets Fen, deadwood seems to express they think the doe should find a partner. The doe even is confused by this, repeating that just before the tree was telling her to avoid her own kind. So deadwood was, inherently, giving Fen special treatment over Rhiker. It's debatable whether deadwood didn't actually know that Rhiker was the doe's friend, or if they knew and killed her anyway out of spite.

ahh okay this clears it up quite a bit actually! i guess i was a little confused about her first interactions with fen and rhiker being very different, but looking back on it again after this i can see it kind of comes across that doe may have been intimidated by rhiker, being a large, outspoken doe from the nearby herd she had been trying to avoid. i think maybe she was afraid of rhiker at first, and had hoped to appear strong (or maybe she just wanted to impress the pretty lady). meanwhile, fen was just a meek little buck that wasn't even a little intimidating and was quite a push-over.
i hope im interpreting all that right, it's crazy what you notice when you re-read lol.

the kindness... maybe deadwood doesn't want her to meet the herd because he doesn't want Doe to think that he is not kind (I perceive deadwood as male, tho im not sure "he" actually has a gender).

I generally go with "they" for deadwood, as I don't really know what to go with otherwise. I think not having a gender makes the tree even more alien from the cast, although I'm not bothered by any pronouns used (because, tree)

that makes sense, but at the same time I feel weird using "they" for multiple people

it's funny but the words "kindness" and "Demon" in the same sentence seems to me a magnificent oxymoron
