Heroic: Darius is a hero by nature. If given a choice, he does what is right. If the choice is less clear-cut, he does what seems right even when it’s difficult, though he’ll consider carefully before deciding. It can make him seem arrogant or inaccessible at times, but really it’s just part of who he is.
Courageous: Brave to a fault, really, even if part of it comes from superior fighting skills and familiarity with danger. Darius is skilled in combat and doesn’t hesitate to put his life on the line to save friends or bystanders from danger. Some might call him foolhardy, but his courage is something that sets him apart from other criminal investigators.
Intelligent: He rivals Sherlock Holmes when it comes to his preferred line of work. He’s a quick-witted criminal investigator of the highest order, capable of solving even the most complex of crimes, though usually his method of wrapping a case up involves a little bit more violence than is usual from Sherlock.
Stubborn: Unyielding is another good name for this. Once Darius gets on a case, he doesn’t stop, even if it would be best to set it aside for a while. It isn’t that he can’t see reason when necessary, more that he’s extremely driven and dedicated, and once he gets the bit in his teeth he’s all but impossible to stop.
Gruff: Well, not gruff exactly, but certainly intimidating and a bit unaware of his own reputation. He’s built quite a name for himself in his twenty years of work, and sometimes his personality, when viewed from the outside, can make him seem more intimidating than he really is. Combine that with the fact that he can be totally unaware of how frightening he is even be to his allies, and you’ve got someone people will avoid if they don’t know him well.
Eccentric: A War-Forged part Aodhian former noble who solves crime for a living? Yeah, Darius is eccentric, and proud of it. He uses more modern crime-solving techniques than are generally common, and isn’t afraid to step on a few toes or act in a less-than-normal way to achieve his ends. This mostly manifests itself as socially unusual behavior that outsiders view as being only a few steps short of insanity.
Skilled Fighter: Darius has grown accustomed to violence, and not just physically. Emotionally he’s learned how to deal with the fallout of a bad situation and remain calm under fire, unafraid until after the situation’s calmed down. He’s capable of quickly evaluating a fight and doing the best thing, and he has a good grasp of strategy.
Open-Minded: Darius is extremely old-fashioned socially, at least from an Aodh perspective. Sometimes he feels like the world is changing too fast for him, but he is ready to accept what comes and is happy with the way the War-Forged are changing under Hira.
Paranoid: You try being a lawman with many enemies in the criminal underworld without sleeping with a knife under your pillow. Darius is always on the alert for an attack, even in the most mundane of situations. Generally it doesn’t interfere with his normal life, and it’s more than justified in most cases. You’ll never find him without a knife of some kind on his person.
History:
Childhood: Birth to 12
He was born to a War-Forged mother and father, merchants, both with close ties to Aodh. His mother was a generation removed from Aodh nobility and his father had many acquaintances (and a child he didn't know about), but both were united through a mutual love for the Onean way of life. They had a daughter, Tel, and then, three years later, Darius. They spent every other winter Aodh, trading and exposing their children to the extravagance and wealth of their neighbors, young Darius learning the ways of the court. His cousin on his mother’s side tried to take him under his wing and bring him to live with him in Valore, but Darius resisted, preferring to stay with his family and sister with the War-Forged. He spent his early years trying to be the best son he could and poking his nose into things he shouldn’t have.
Teenage Years: 13 to 20
As a teenager, fitting in became harder. His cousin began putting more pressure on him to come to Valore, but Darius had come to look down on the superficial lifestyle of the nobles, and he had no interest in living in Eithne as one of the lower classes. He chose to stay in Onea, but he struggled to fit in, his nosiness and general teenage awkwardness making him a bit of an outcast among the other children his age. His father died when he turned sixteen, and he was forced to take on part of his father's job. His mother and sister handled family finances while training him to eventually take over, and he handled the selling aspect of the job. The family managed to stay afloat for several years until Darius's penchant for investigation finally got him into serious trouble.
He was investigating a customer who wasn't local, which was more than enough to piqueDarius's curiosity. The customer was behaving oddly and Darius was "investigating" (stalking) him one evening when he stumbled onto the scene of a murder in progress. It was far too late to help the victim, and the perpetrator took off, leaving Darius to be found by Raiders not long after.
While they were never able to prove Darius's guilt, the incident made him a target instead of an outcast, hurting his family's business badly enough that his sister took over the selling aspect as well. When he turned seventeen he moved to Valore and stayed with his cousin, who trained him in politics and how to manage a noble house, but Darius never felt really comfortable in that life either. The next few years passed with little incident, leaving Darius with nothing but a growing feeling of isolation.
Adulthood: 21+
As Darius entered adulthood, noble life began to weigh even more heavily on him. His cousin sent him on an extended vacation in the hopes it would clear his head. The trip lasted nearly a year, and Darius had traveled to Serora, Sirith, and the Talori. After a bit of wavering he decided to extend his trip by a few weeks and visit his family for the first time since he'd left five years earlier. His family was more than happy to see him again, but there was a coldness and a distance he hadn't expected. The local prejudice against him had mostly died away, though, and he was able to renew some old relationships.
Three days before he'd planned on heading back to Eithne, another murder was committed. He couldn't resist the chance to investigate, though he didn't think it was related to the one which had sent him into exile. For a time he was less than successful, unused to the intricacies of criminal investigation. Nearly two weeks after he'd planned to return to his cousin, he found, confronted, and brought in the murderer armed only with a knife, naïveté, and a disproportionate amount of luck. After things calmed down it sank in that he'd succeeded and slowly, he began to realize he’d found his calling. For the next several years he plied his new-found trade around his hometown, refusing his cousin's demands that he come home and making himself a regular nuisance for the local Raiders and Scouts until he applied for and received an official rank, that of Scout. It was during this time he met the horse who would become his close friend and partner, Wayne.
He's spent many years bringing criminals to justice and his influence has spread across Onea. He is called in by local Raiders and Scouts who are too busy or are unable to track down the more difficult and wily criminals.
