Description I wasn't going to do this, but would you believe, my PUBLISHER forced me to do one (they're putting together folders to promote me and other artists at an upcoming book fair and they think it's a nice way to describe my style XD)

Anyway. Hope you can make sense of it, I arranged it funny XD Some things are more important than others, and I wouldn't go as far as to say my stuff looks too much like some of these, more that I liked one aspect of their work or that I find it very inspiring.

Sonia,,,,,, I heart you!!!

There are so many here I love. I love that you have all three TB artists there and Amano there. Not surprised by Clamp. I knew that you are a fan of they're work.

Having seen the other artists do this I'm tempted to give this a go (not that I have a book fair or anything, just curious if anyone would be surprised by the result XD).

Haha, yup, I've just fallen in love with all the various artists involved with toribura, they're all so so good at what they do, I want to get to sense of elegance and epicness into my work more often

Sephirayne In reply to sonialeong [2010-11-18 08:59:18 +0000 UTC]

Same here. They are all amazing artists. They are my main influence at the moment. I hope to have a sense of epicness with mine. My work can be quite gothic and I love the Toribura art because its the style I want to do.

I think your work is amazing as it is. Going a bit epic would be awesome though xx

Thats cool, I recognised quite a few here and i see where your coming from. If I did'nt know already I would have guessed you were a clamp fan, I'm really fond of clamp myself (All that watching Cardcaptors when it was on UK TV years back lol) Its an interesting combination and quite a varied contrast in the styles, also in that some of its music related, nice to get a feel for what motivates you ^^

Thats pretty cool that you put L'arc En Ciel and Edmund Blair Leighton (omg the image you chose of his, thats like one of my most favourite paintings!) in there. Influences I never would've imagined but I suddenly realise are in there

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sonialeong In reply to Naoru [2010-09-27 09:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Yup, L'Arc's music is quite changeable and varied on the surface, but it's always very refined, dramatic, polished with lovely lyrics, mellow lead guitar and virtuoso bass lines. In a funny sort of way, I try to translate their sound into lines, facial expressions.

Leighton's romantic images of beautiful women and acts of chivalry are gorgeous and when I draw full page spreads or standalones of virtuous or innocent girls, or said girls being protected I can't help but think of his work.

CLAMP was and still remains my biggest inspiration, ever since Magic Knights Rayearth in the early '90s Like them, I started off using massive amounts of pattern tone, but I've learnt gradually to rein things back a bit and concentrate more on the lines and shading

CLAMP were the ladies who first got me interested in drawing manga, i saw their work and just thought....I wanna draw like that nothing else in manga has grabbed the same way since. if that makes sense lol. I also find their stories inspiring, the ideas and narrative, all of it is wonderful.

Laruku = homophone for L'Arc or L'Arc~en~Ciel

Sorry, longtime fans of the band automatically refer to them as Laruku for short/cuteness

Sorry. I didn't know. Their songs are ok. I only hear the songs for Fullmetal Alchemist and Gundam 00.

Yup, that's why CLAMP got six squares all to themselves XD There are a few names I had to miss out due to space issues, I could fill at least another one of these I read and listen and observe very widely

For what it's worth, I'm interested in the couple artists I'm not familiar with here. A lot of these lists I've bothered to check are half Kingdom Hearts and whatever flavour of the week, but you've created a nice personal canon of influence here.

Oh! Great seems a little out-of-place considering everything else though, haha.

sonialeong In reply to monkeynohito [2010-09-25 00:30:50 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I love his ecchi/sexy fighting women and fight scenes - the rare occasions I get to do proper battle poses he is the first person I look at for inspiration. Him and Rando Ayamine (GetBackers), Yukito Kishiro (Battle Angel Alita), Masamune Shirow (GITS). But true, that's the main thing about his work I like, it's not a heavy influence, hence why he only gets one square XD

monkeynohito In reply to sonialeong [2010-09-25 08:40:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I really like the art in Air Gear, especially how he works all the graph design into effects and everything. It can be pretty rough to actually read though, haha.

I wish there were more series with chicks just plain kicking ass like back in the nineties, but everything now has to be swimming in ecchi with a twist of blatant misogyny here and there, so I get sick of a lot of those newer series. I'm no prude by any stretch, but a lot of it's just so much more aggressive than it used to be. Air Gear and...what is it...Ikki Tousen/Battle Vixens, I pick those up, thinking they'll be good action reads and find shit like rape just casually sprinkled around and a lot of the time it's for humour value; it's ridiculous.

You should try Hyper Police, retro and cute and sexy and action and guns and anthro and just so well drawn

monkeynohito In reply to sonialeong [2010-09-27 10:40:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I really like Gunsmith Cats too. I dig older ecchi stuff, a lot of the newer series have some seriously degrading undercurrents. It gets old seeing books pandering to people who'd rather have their personal issues massaged than be read a solid piece of entertainment.

Your mentioning the mix of newer and older series along those lines just got me thinking of the difference between the two eras, I'm getting old. Sorry to babble about it.
