Description

So, the X-Men film series has come to a close… well, the main series: “The New Mutants” isn’t out until next year. But yeah… I am kind of sad that it’s all over. Not just that “Dark Phoenix” was okay and got better at the end, but was depressing as an ending… it’s also how much more there was to come.

Anyway, I first watched the movies, let alone gotten into X-Men overall, when I was 13-going on-14, mostly 13. I was captivated by the movies. I mean, yeah for them being cool and all, but it was the story, themes and characters- let alone the concept. Those were what drawed me to the series. Even rewatching them, mostly X2: X-Men United (my favorite!), I appreciate them more. So yes, the films are my favorite incarnation of the characters: yet I also like the shows and even some of the books I have read. The saga has been inspiration to me, even with my own creations.

I also like the Prequel Trilogy… errh.. Prequels… though only one is actually a prequel and the others are a crossover and alternate-prequels/sequel-prequels that still take place before the originals. I got back into the characters during the eyar “Days of Future Past” came out, rewatching the trilogy again and falling in obsession all over, even developing a better appreciation for the movies.

After watching DoFP, I came to a thought that has still been with me now…. The “X-Men” title doesn’t refer to the team. No, what it is referring to is mutantkind in general. They are the X-Men, living among normal men, trying to either unite with them or be against them. In all, the main aspect is either survival or unity. It’s what the overall theme of the series is…

..that is probably why I am not a big fan of The Wolverine Trilogy. I mean, there are other reasons, why they are not as good as the X-Men movies: but with Wolverine being the main character of the trilogy, they feel like spin-offs of the main character but without the other cast members. In addition, they differ away from the feel/tone of the Bryan Singer films (both Last Stand & First Class were not handled by Singer, but they count.. well, more of TLS than FC…. ). It doesn’t mean they are bad though, I like some elements from them (even the…… not-that-great Origins, I liked the Brotherhood that Logan and Victor had, and Gambit was a cool character). As for Deadpool and DP2, I have not watched those…..

So, well…. there is a lot more I would like to share, but I’d bore you all to death…  Anyway, these are some of my favorite films, and recently rewatching them with my youngest brother has been a blast (I wanted to have him catch up on them for Dark Phoenix)…  yet sad at the same time, because of Disney buying 20th Century Fox, they are pulling the plug on this series and not letting them finish things up… and it is worse that the sabotaged  “Dark Phoenix” during the production and release. As I have said above, or to be honest, it could’ve had more work and effort, but for what it was, it was nice. Plus, it had more originality than Endgame! (While DP is at fault for feeling like a funeral, it gets to the point. Endgame dragged and wasted time and had a dumb Middle-Earth style battle and well, kind of insulted the earlier MCU films while simultaneously trying to honor them). And while it would be cool to see what Marvel Studios would do with the characters, perhaps even adapt elements form the 90s cartoon (maybe even from others, like XM-Evolution), seeing the direction of Disney currently, I wouldn’t mind seeing their woke “X-People: Wrath of Kelly the Evil White Male!” crash and burn harder and hotter than both Phoenix films combined.

To elaborate what I said above, yeah, “Dark Phoenix” did feel at times like a slow silent funeral…. And that sadly is what it was. It kind of works for it (though I wish it could be more fun… not Endgame level “fun” that it…. look, I know I seem to be hating on Endgame here…. I will give it a break and admit there were things I liked about it…. though I’ll save that for another picture or you can ask me in the comments below). It is the end of an era, an era that has had it’s ups and downs, but did do the one thing that others barley have done…. Not give up!

I want to congratulate the series for standing for 19-20 years: while other heroes have been rebooted into different new canons and incarnations, have several bat-men, Spidermen, even two Hulks in the same universe- the X-Men have been the same series… even if there have been different new canons and incarnations in it…  yeah, the timeline has been tricky, but as one YouTuber pointed out, each film probably takes place in it’s own universe! It’s amazing that they didn’t bail like how SM4 and BM: Triumphant were never made and those particular series I mentioned ended on films 3 & 4!

In conclusion to this badly written half-easy thing…. Thanks for the stories, the characters, the ideas, the thought-provoking concepts, and the memories. And thanks for the inspiration.

Thank you, X-Men saga!

I will miss the Fox X-Men films, but I am also excited for what the MCU will do with them too. One issue I had with the Fox X-Men was that they never especially did anything with the school and the concept of students of one generation graduating to teach the next one. That's what I'm hoping for with the MCU versions, that and maybe having the Blue and Gold teams so we can still have one X-Men film a year and yes, do Avengers vs X-Men, The Coming of Galactus and Secret Wars as a sort of parallel trilogy of fall and rise to Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame with the New Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four.

I will miss this saga (specifically X-Men; X2; First Class and Days of Future Past AKA my favs).  I'd have liked to seen a least one more adventure with the original cast done justice.

Well, dare to dream...

I shall remember the cast and characters with fond memories.  Everyone may have the MCU which will stand the test of time, but for me, this X-Men films were my superhero fix.

X-MEN, YOU ROCKED MY WORLD!!!

One thing's for sure about Dark Phoenix....it did not deserve to get screwed over by Disney for Captain Marvel like Alita. Bob Iger should be ashamed.

The thing is, Bob Igor has no shame...   barley anyone high in Disney has shame. It's not just screwing Dark Phoenix and canceling Gambit, but there is also the canceling of other FOX properties like Mousegaurd (which would've been cool, I even flipped through a book of it at a comic store weeks ago). And of course...  how they treat Star Wars.... make souless remakes of their animated films, ect.

I'm pretty sure that was Fox who screwed up Dark Phoenix, not Disney since the reshoots were under them and that it occured prior to the merger being finalised. Heck, the reason why the film's release date was moved from February to June of this year is that James Cameron didn't want Alita: Battle Angel to compete against Aquaman and Bumblebee out of fear that they would beat them at the box office, hence said film was moved from November 2018 to February 2019.

And just so you know, I'm not defending Disney and they're not the only ones who get flack for a lot of things. Look at WB with their DC films that was released before Aquaman and look at Sony with how they treated their animated division before Spider-Verse came out.

While I do have some things I don't agree with Iger which I won't go into any detail, I still think his predecessor Michael Eisner did a lot of bad things during his time as Disney CEO.

About Gambit, it had a troubled preproduction and that it looked unlikely that it would be made and I do hope Mouse Guard finds a new studio since director Wes Ball did say that he'll be ready to revive the project in the near future following the confirmation that the film isn't going forward under Disney, hence I'd like to see either Universal or Warner doing the film. Heck, despite having an official release date for 2021, I'm a bit doubtful that Nimona will be made after all since there's only been a few news about the animated film adaptation ever since it was announced in 2015.

But I respect your opinion on the current era of Disney.

There is good in them, but the bad is so apparent, especially with the Mulan controversy. Aladdin was great though. So was Beauty and the Beast.
