Description
So, the X-Men film series has come to a close… well, the main series: “The New Mutants” isn’t out until next year. But yeah… I am kind of sad that it’s all over. Not just that “Dark Phoenix” was okay and got better at the end, but was depressing as an ending… it’s also how much more there was to come.
Anyway, I first watched the movies, let alone gotten into X-Men overall, when I was 13-going on-14, mostly 13. I was captivated by the movies. I mean, yeah for them being cool and all, but it was the story, themes and characters- let alone the concept. Those were what drawed me to the series. Even rewatching them, mostly X2: X-Men United (my favorite!), I appreciate them more. So yes, the films are my favorite incarnation of the characters: yet I also like the shows and even some of the books I have read. The saga has been inspiration to me, even with my own creations.
I also like the Prequel Trilogy… errh.. Prequels… though only one is actually a prequel and the others are a crossover and alternate-prequels/sequel-prequels that still take place before the originals. I got back into the characters during the eyar “Days of Future Past” came out, rewatching the trilogy again and falling in obsession all over, even developing a better appreciation for the movies.
After watching DoFP, I came to a thought that has still been with me now…. The “X-Men” title doesn’t refer to the team. No, what it is referring to is mutantkind in general. They are the X-Men, living among normal men, trying to either unite with them or be against them. In all, the main aspect is either survival or unity. It’s what the overall theme of the series is…
..that is probably why I am not a big fan of The Wolverine Trilogy. I mean, there are other reasons, why they are not as good as the X-Men movies: but with Wolverine being the main character of the trilogy, they feel like spin-offs of the main character but without the other cast members. In addition, they differ away from the feel/tone of the Bryan Singer films (both Last Stand & First Class were not handled by Singer, but they count.. well, more of TLS than FC…. ). It doesn’t mean they are bad though, I like some elements from them (even the…… not-that-great Origins, I liked the Brotherhood that Logan and Victor had, and Gambit was a cool character). As for Deadpool and DP2, I have not watched those…..
So, well…. there is a lot more I would like to share, but I’d bore you all to death… Anyway, these are some of my favorite films, and recently rewatching them with my youngest brother has been a blast (I wanted to have him catch up on them for Dark Phoenix)… yet sad at the same time, because of Disney buying 20th Century Fox, they are pulling the plug on this series and not letting them finish things up… and it is worse that the sabotaged “Dark Phoenix” during the production and release. As I have said above, or to be honest, it could’ve had more work and effort, but for what it was, it was nice. Plus, it had more originality than Endgame! (While DP is at fault for feeling like a funeral, it gets to the point. Endgame dragged and wasted time and had a dumb Middle-Earth style battle and well, kind of insulted the earlier MCU films while simultaneously trying to honor them). And while it would be cool to see what Marvel Studios would do with the characters, perhaps even adapt elements form the 90s cartoon (maybe even from others, like XM-Evolution), seeing the direction of Disney currently, I wouldn’t mind seeing their woke “X-People: Wrath of Kelly the Evil White Male!” crash and burn harder and hotter than both Phoenix films combined.
To elaborate what I said above, yeah, “Dark Phoenix” did feel at times like a slow silent funeral…. And that sadly is what it was. It kind of works for it (though I wish it could be more fun… not Endgame level “fun” that it…. look, I know I seem to be hating on Endgame here…. I will give it a break and admit there were things I liked about it…. though I’ll save that for another picture or you can ask me in the comments below). It is the end of an era, an era that has had it’s ups and downs, but did do the one thing that others barley have done…. Not give up!
I want to congratulate the series for standing for 19-20 years: while other heroes have been rebooted into different new canons and incarnations, have several bat-men, Spidermen, even two Hulks in the same universe- the X-Men have been the same series… even if there have been different new canons and incarnations in it… yeah, the timeline has been tricky, but as one YouTuber pointed out, each film probably takes place in it’s own universe! It’s amazing that they didn’t bail like how SM4 and BM: Triumphant were never made and those particular series I mentioned ended on films 3 & 4!
In conclusion to this badly written half-easy thing…. Thanks for the stories, the characters, the ideas, the thought-provoking concepts, and the memories. And thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you, X-Men saga!
