Seriously. What is with people saying that because two characters are similar, one character is a rip off of the other? In the case of Rainbow Dash and Sonic, they are similar, yes, but they aren't rip offs. Sonic can't do a Sonic Rainboom like Rainbow Dash. Rainbow can't do a chaos control like Sonic. Yeah, MLP came before sonic technically. Also RD actually has depth and development, and there's the fact that she belongs to a good franchise.

Rainbow Dash's coloration and name is based off of G3 Rainbow Dash.
Her personality is based off of a G1pony named Firefly. Β There's also a theory that she had slight inspiration from PPG's Buttercup, which Faust worked on in the past.
Her design is based off of a sketch of an unofficial G4 Firefly (AKA proto-Rainbow Dash) drawn by Lauren Faust during FiMs' earliest production days. Β The only reason it was changed was because Hasbro only rights to G3 MLP, not G1(excluding the characters of Applejack and Spike), so RD is pretty much a recolor of G4 Firefly with a different cutie Mark. I never saw rainbow as a ripoff. In fact incase those people haven't noticed most characters coincidentally may have similar personalities. And I wouldn't call it ripping off, more like just getting inspiration
