Description This is the last page.

Geez... Now I don't even know what to do. Making a comic is so fun, and so rewarding (improvement wise). But I'm not sure if I'll be able to think of another comic to make, and if I do I just KNOW you guys will bug me about how "A Dozen Years was better."

;_________________________________________;

Anyway, enjoy Earl being thrown out like trash. Literally.

Wyboth [2015-07-29 03:50:03 +0000 UTC]

I really enjoyed this. You drew a comic about domestic violence, something no other sonamy artist I'm aware of has done, and you did it WELL. It wasn't sappy or vapid, and it took itself seriously. I love that, and I wish more people would make comics like this. I think it deserves a serious review. Here is what I liked and didn't like.

I thought the silliness in some of the descriptions was out of place. It's fine for awkward scenes, since our natural reaction is to shy away from awkwardness and replace it with some other emotion. Comedy relief / silliness fits the bill there. But I didn't think it was appropriate for the serious parts, especially those dealing with domestic violence. I was really starting to empathize with Amy, but then I read the description and I was blasted with silly emoticons. It really killed the mood.

Speaking of domestic violence, I think you handled it pretty well. You didn't trivialize it or make jokes about it (thank you for not doing that), and you made it pretty believable. I noticed one detail that a lot of people probably missed: Amy wore sunglasses and a JACKET, meaning she was hiding bruises on her body as well. This makes us wonder if Amy was not only physically assaulted, but sexually assaulted as well. It was very small, but well-placed, and it got the point across without actually showing sexual assault.

The one thing I wish you had done is delve more into how Amy's abusive relationship with Earl affects Amy psychologically. We only saw a couple of snippets of her interacting with Earl, and each time, it was just him abusing her. Maybe show her going through the stages of Lenore E. Walker's cycle of abuse. We see her attempt to avoid discussing her problems with her friends several times, which is great, but that's only the visible effects of abuse - we never saw how it affected her inwardly. You did a great job of making us empathize with the characters in other moments, so I'm sure you could have pulled this off.

I thought the part about Amy supposedly being pregnant went on for a little too long. If you were busy with school and had to write a little filler, then I understand. Out of that context, viewed as a complete work, it drags on for longer than it needs to. It was a well-placed comic relief to offset the serious tone of the story. You were certainly walking on eggshells by joking about possibly staring at someone's breasts and wondering if they're pregnant when this person is a victim of rape, but I think you managed not to crack any. Good job. Also, I see how it led in to a discussion about Amy's abusive relationship.

Tails's exposition on page 11 was really nice. It helped us empathize with Amy, and it fit her character well. You also showed 3 of the 5 stages of grief (I'm sure if you showed all of them, it would have been too long). This was one of the best parts, which was unfortunately spoiled by silliness ("blah blah blah "). I also thought Sonic and Tails went to the topic of Amy's relationship too quickly, but I guess having them discuss other things first wouldn't be important to the plot.

I would have also liked to see more exposition about how Sonic developed feelings for Amy. Did he do it while he was gone for 12 years? He just shows up already partially in love with her. It's not too big of a deal, but it would've been nice to learn why he fell in love with her.

Another thing that bothered me was that Sonic only reminisced about losing 12 years of his life for about 10 seconds. Surely, if I had to leave my friends for 12 years, I would spend more time mourning the time I lost with them. And I would definitely think of them while I was gone - meaning I can't buy Sonic's statement that he never did. I'd eventually decide that it's pointless to mourn the past more that I already had, because it can't be changed, but I would do it for longer.

"Since the love of my life was off putting himself in danger every five minutes, I wanted to treat every moment like it was our last! A-And then one time... It was..." Great explanation for why Amy was so enthusiastic about Sonic in the canon games/show. The last line hit especially hard. Well done. This is another one of my favourite parts.

Another small detail that I noticed: Amy wasn't wearing sunglasses and a jacket when Sonic came to her house during the rain, but she was wearing them the next day, meaning Earl assaulted her again. Now we're thinking she started to not put up with Earl as much since her feelings for Sonic have been reawakened, and he responded with violence. I like how you leave subtle hints about her abuse. I also like how you made Amy push Sonic away after their kiss - it's better that way than her just completely accepting him and forgetting about Earl. It shows that, despite the abuse, she does love Earl. Moreover, this is accurate for most people in abusive relationships: they do love their partners, and they "forget" the abuse by accepting their partner's excuses for it, or they are tricked into believing they brought about the abuse (I really, REALLY would have liked to see Earl victim-blame Amy and have her accept it, but later have her realize it's not her fault. Not that I like victim-blaming, it would have just added more depth to the story to see Amy struggle with it and eventually overcome it, just as people in real life do).

Very good switcheroo at the end. When Sonic rushed off to fight Earl, I was worried you were going to have him take revenge for Amy, which I thought wouldn't be a good ending. Real-life victims of abuse rarely want revenge on their abusers; it's more about healing and moving on. But, if we're going to have revenge, I thought, then it should be Amy's to take, not Sonic's. I'm glad you made it so.

Amy's dialogue on page 63 is really great. I've always been bothered by the shows and the games turning her into a damsel in distress, so "I'm not some stupid damsel in distress!" was a great empowering line, and even more so because she ends up saving Sonic. It's somewhat feminist, which is awesome. Anita Sarkeesian smiles upon you today. Amy also continues her line of thought from earlier about fearing for Sonic's life, and then being angry with him for putting himself in danger. Page 63 is another of my favourite pages.

That's all the criticism I can offer. This is definitely the best Sonamy comic I've ever read, and the best Sonic comic in general that I've ever read. By DeviantArt's standards, this earns an A+. Nothing else even comes close. By my own strict standards, it earns a middle B, which means it had some problems, but overall was very good. Thanks for writing and drawing this. If you don't have another burning idea for a comic inside of you, then I'd say don't bother with another one. This one was good because it was deep (at least for the Sonic franchise). If you read all of this, then thanks for listening to me! I'd love to talk more about this comic, or anything in general, to hear what you have to say about it, and what you were thinking when you drew this. Thanks again for making such a great comic!
