Definitely painterly - in fact this lighting is referred specifically to chirascuro (possibly not spelled like that My grasp of itallian terminology is not good) and was used extensively by caravaggio.

I love it. It always adds depth.

In the risk of sounding corny and ridiculous.. The light and shadow and the overall tone very much remind me of Rembrandt's paintings. I love it.
