Well, that's so they can move in them.
The thick, heavy leather coats they wear in The Matrix are ridiculous. The actors wouldn't even be able to take a step if the prop coats weren't actually made thinner/lighter and edited later after the filming. Keanu Reeves has always been a string bean.
