Throw one big cat in there, both of these dogs would totally change their tune. Bravo on the capture!

Is there a single definition that pins down what exactly art is?

Yes. Art is creative expression. Photography is like the easy button to art so to avoid being flooded by it its categorized often separately. Because honestly, without this title, this is just a photo of 2 wolves that shows how well cameras work.
But I know that this is techincally art because of that. I didn't ask because I didn't know, I asked because, my comment really wasn't out of place in comparison to his art. The first half of my comment that I'm not sure can ever be retrieved actually commented on what I liked about this photographic piece of art. The second half was a comment on how I don't like dogs. Regardless of how general or empirically I said it; all opinionated. The lesson here is not whether or not I think this is art. The lesson is about judging others. Because a comment regardless always demonstrates that ability. Every comment.
So clearly, the reason I commented was the reason he posted a picture in the first place. He contributed to human creativity as I contributed to human self judgement.
But hey no ones perfect. I expect a few low brow tl;dr replies to this anyway. Well that answers all of our questions.

There's one thing I want put my two cents to. I've taken both photography and arts during my studies, really tried my hand in both and I can tell you photography isn't the "easy button" to art. It is often categorized separately due to the fact that its a different medium in the tradition sense of the word, art. It's not "how well cameras work" but how well you work it. Everyone can be a self-proclaimed photographer but very few are truly recognized.
Another could turn it around painting's the "easy button" to art. But hell, it'll become a circular argument. I would to argue and say he captured the ferocity and movement of the wolves in that moment like the way most artists capture a special or particular moment. I'm no great debator & I'm just tired today. Plus, no one can force someone to see what they don't. So whatever. Believe what you will.

My eyes listen, and my ears see. I hear what you wrote and I see what others are saying.
The real artist here is nature. The photographers, me included as I was once an aspiring photographer, are simply the producers, the editors, the censors. We market nature to the world in our art form known as photography.
And just like you said, that is the art. The process. Others will pass over this and others will read it.
