I too am INCREDIBLY excited - you are not alone! I've been hoping for a Lady Thirteen for absolute years, and at last, my wish came true! I spent much of Sunday wandering around in circles, waving my hands above my head, and screaming happily. Simply the best news I've gotten in a long time. Finally! FINALLY!!!!! Gorgeous, glorious, wonderful. 100% support.
And to the naysayers: Tennant was too pretty. Smith was too young. Capaldi was too old. Whittaker's too female. See a pattern here? My uncle grew up watching Doctor Who, and he told me today that when Patrick Troughton left and Jon Pertwee came on, people complained about him too, and I'm almost sure that back in the 1970s, someone wrote to their local Doctor Who fan club complaining "That Tom Baker guy's too WEIRD! HE can't be the Doctor!"
The Doctor is the Doctor, and all that the Doctor stands for - no matter WHAT face is on display, that's always the Doctor in there. What the Doctor represents, believes, does, shows us all that it's possible to stand up and be strong and brave and kind: that's what matters.
Beautiful work, by the way. I can't imagine why I'm not watching you already, but I'll be remedying that right away!
Rock on, Thirteen; let's fly!

I wish people would wait for this incarnation to debut and judge her by how the actress portrayed her and how the writers wrote her to be, not by her gender.

Me too, I think that's the best thing to do. Her gender isn't gonna stop her from saving the universe, that's for sure!

Of course it doesn't stop her, but why the heck did they just suddenly change The Doctor to be a female? It makes no sense to me and The Doctor will always be a male in my eyes

You have to take a look back at the history of the BBC to answer the question of why they've 'suddenly' changed the Doctor to be female. It's not sudden. Sydney Newman (one of the co-creators of Doctor Who) has been on record stating the Doctor could be changed to a female, this is back in the 1980s! Most of the actors who have played the Doctor, Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker in particular, have also mentioned that the character can change genders. This is a concept that has been around far beyond the 2005 - present day series. The reason why we haven't had an actress in the role yet is because the society of the time probably wasn't ready for it. Don't forget, we also haven't had a black Doctor, an Asian Doctor, ANY ethnic minority as the Doctor. We still have a long way to go in terms of representation. They have all been white males up to this point and that is because of society, because of the BBC and because of casting decisions, NOT because of the show itself or the narrative in the show, which has always stated that Time Lords are able to change every single aspect of their physiology upon regeneration, which includes gender.

I'm surely fine with the doctor being a dark- skinned or asian male for example but as a female the show is going to change pretty much. And even though the concept has been around for a long time, i'm pretty sure the decision this year was made partly because of the feminists that have now started demanding women's rights more actively. Just my opinion, but I would rather have a goldfish or a dog than a female as a doctor 😂

Why can't the Doctor be female? The Doctor is a hero, a leader, an intellectual, full of wisdom, anger, fury and power. Why can't those traits be applied to a female? As a trained actress Jodie is more than capable of bringing all of that 'last of the Time Lords' fury, and she can also bring silliness, lighter sides, etc. I don't see why women's rights are a problem, we should always strive for equality as the Doctor does the very same. The Doctor stands for equality, the Doctor stands for genders being treated equally. In fact, the Doctor comes from an alien species that is much more advanced, beyond our concepts of gender. As quoted by the Twelfth Doctor:
"We're the most civilized civilization in the universe. We're billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes."
To say that you'd prefer a goldfish or a dog is a little insulting to the women who train VERY hard to be actresses in a male-dominated industry. This role is an opportunity to play an alien species. The Doctor is not human, therefore he does not conform to our understandings of gender, therefore a woman like Jodie is just as capable of playing this alien character in a powerful and engaging way, the same as Peter Capaldi is currently doing.

Of course they can probably she would too but in a whole different way. And probably we should strive for equality but not in everything! It doesn't matter if the main character is a male or a female in any show so why would someone change that. And even though she's acting a time lord, she's still a human, so is all the males who have played him too, but she has her own strengths and weaknesses in acting too plus she's new to the show now

The Doctor is a brilliant character regardless of gender. It's as simple as this - the show has explained, in its narrative, that Time Lords are able to change every single element of their body during regeneration, including gender appearances. Therefore, the Doctor CAN be female. The Doctor WILL be female. The Doctor should've probably been female already just due to the 50% chance of being a female after every regeneration.
We should strive for gender equality because women should have the same rights as men.
It matters that the Doctor is female now because so many people are having a problem with it. We've had a strong run of women as companions since 1963. The moment we put a woman into the Doctor's shoes, everybody kicks up a fuss. But you have no problems with companions, so why can't you accept that the Doctor might want to reflect the strong women he's been travelling with these 50+ years, and take a female appearance?
You should give her a chance. The whole point of this show is constant change, renewal and regeneration to keep it fresh. This is just another exciting change and I am personally very excited to see what Jodie brings to the role. She's going to open up new areas of the character we all know and love. If you disagree, if you can't accept Jodie and if you'd rather have a dog or a goldfish, then you've got 50+ years of the show to keep you entertained while the rest of us will support the new series.

I did that for the Ghostbusters movie, and I liked the all-female team. Sadly, I didn't like the humor, which I found paled in comparison of the last two films.

I only hope that she won't have to endure such abysmally bad scripts as the ones Peter Capaldi's tenure was dominated by.
Even great casting can't save a terrible script.

Between the new Doctor and the new showrunner and where they came from I just wonder how many Broadchurch easter eggs the two of them will smuggle into the show.
