Description

The Stithopod world is one of my two major worldbuilding projects, the other being the Shrith world. The Shrith world and the Stithopod world were created around the same time, but I forgot which one came first. Regardless, if memory serves correct, I created the Stithopod world around the same time a YouTuber named Biblaridion created his Alien Biospheres series, and this series was a big motivation for me to work on the Stithopods.

The general body plan for the Stithopods was taken from a different project created before that is now dead. The project was supposed to surround a sophont race, and I came up with a body plan characterized by the legs being attached to the thorax, akin to insects, but that race only had 4 limbs, not 6, like now. I wanted to know what a non-sapient animal would look like with that body plan, so I drew a couple alien animals, and I really liked how they looked. The project eventually died, but I continued to play around with that general design, and the very first iterations of what would become the Stithopods looked very different from the current Stithopods.

A while later, maybe a few weeks, after having worked on their design, the very first Stithopod illustrations were made, and I would go on to make dozens more. They were all pencil drawings, and were very naive and mediocre compared to my current creations and current art skills, but it was a start. I intended to post them online, but for some reason, I never did. Maybe that was for the best. But moving on, knowing I wanted to put them out there, I digitally drew over the first Stithopod, tracing it and digitally coloring it. That is what you see above. The very first Stithopod. The first creature that I gave the name “Stithopod” to. The art is bad, and the design is very different in comparison to the current Stithopod design.

The initial design was mammalian-like, and was characterized by the presence of pedipalps. The current version is not mammalian-like, and the pedipalps were traded for a trunk. I ended the first version of the Stithopod project for a number of factors, but I find it a little funny how, even after several years and multiple iterations, they’re still around and still being worked on.

In between the first version and the current version are a couple other iterative versions, but it’s amazing to me how much the project has evolved and changed. I’m very happy with the current version. Sometimes, it takes years to come to a design that you like. Sometimes, it takes years before you arrive at something you’re happy with.
