In life these soldiers used to guard the gates of Highfather's temples. In death,their bodies snatched by Morticia the goddess of death, corrupted and turned into undead Templars, now guarding various "religious" buildings on Morticia's dead lands.

Since she has no more live worshippers, apart from corrupt humans in various sects and cults, Morticia must drain her powers from the very undeath that makes her. This is another reason why she put her mutilated son and chained him to the ground in one of her temples(which is also guarded by these Templars), her son is a direct link to her,and to the earth, channeling the undeath in both ways. Any person buried on her dead lands, becomes her servant. When she wants to control undead off her teritory,she sends lich wizards, if you are killed by an undead,you become undead.
