Description This small (about 1.25" by 1.20"), sterling silver pendant is the result of a certain fascination I have with the Jormungand/Ouroboros/World Serpant imagery. I ended up actually making three molds of this - the first one was pretty large, and I cast it in pewter to get a feel for how it would look since it was my first time free-hand carving cuttlefish bone. Then I made another, smaller mold, and cast the master copy for this pendant in pewter so that I'd had something to fall back on if the silver casting didn't work. I made a few small corrections to the mold, and finally cast this one in sterling. I dipped it in the liver of sulphur to bring out the contrast, and then just lightly buffed it and polished it with a fine steel wool instead of tumbling it to keep its sort of "ancient" look.

This is way cool. I've never done cuttlefish bone casting, but I had a friend who did pewter castings with investment. It's a really neat...I bet the weight of the pewter adds a really interesting aspect to the piece that we can't experience here Keep up the awesome work. P>S> Everyone loves the necklace you made for me! I get compliments on it all the times

I loved making it. It's not too expensive to get into either - with the natural textures you use in your work, I bet you could make some kickass cuttlefish designs.

I'm so glad you like - as simple as the design it, it's still one of my favorite pieces I've ever made.

it looks cool and all, but i wouldn't have picked up on the "world snake" image if you hadn't said anything. i can't see a snake at all. just cool wavey bobby things. *^_^*

Hmm, maybe I stylized it too much.

or the angle of the shot might not be working for my head. there are lots of nifty shadows, but that makes it a little bit harder for my eyes to tell what they're seeing, ya know?

I think it was a good idea to just polish it instead of tumbling it. The textures are just amazing! Verra nice!

Neat work... I really like the textures you can achieve on these. And you made it look like an heirloom rather than something new, which fits the image well too. ^..^

The texture on this one came out exactly like I wanted it. Each cuttlefish bone is different, so sometimes you don't know what you're going to get, but I was very pleased with this casting.

Neat. If I'd known you were going to do this years ago when the pet store I worked at closed, I'd have swiped all the cuttlefish bones that were left for you. -..^

That's ok, they probably don't hold up so well over time, and I can still get them in bulk online.

Beautiful! I can see how the layering in the cuttlefish bone gives this an amazing "rippling" look like old driftwood. It's beautiful with its sense of ancient ages!

that's just gorgeous.

i love the way that, from far away, the head of the serpent kind of disappears.
and the antique look?
perfect for it.
if it was perfect silver, it wouldn't look like a snake at all.
