The First Great War was a technological paradigm shift for the armies of Remnant. the romantic age of sword and shield combat quickly gave way under the industrial warfare wrought by mechanization and rapid-fire weapons, and the kingdoms each had to compensate in their own manner.

Vale, late to the armored warfare game, was concerned with the quagmire of trench warfare, and developed machines designed with rough terrain and trench-crossing in mind. This remained their focus throughout the war, and as such left Vale's armored inventory full of outdated machines upon the necessity to re-arm with the outbreak of the Second Great War. the venerable "Valeyards" held the line until the Battle of Mountain Glenn, where rapid development of newer models, developed with help from Vacuo engineers, were able to finally meet Atlas' tanks on a more even footing.
By the Third year of the Second Great War, Vale was beginning to feel the strain of total war, as the Battle of Mount Adrian brought Atlesian forces closer to Vale city than ever before, and the necessity of detonating the Thermic Dust Bomb, while buying Vale more time, nevertheless cut the city off from a valuable avenue of supplies.

Anticipating that the final battle was at hand, Malinov, sticking to his plan to bleed Atlas and force them to negotiate, fielded the final culmination of Vale's Armored Engineering: the Type 23 "Vindicator," Vale's first GCT that could Meet Atlas' Beowulfs on an even footing. Learning from previous models, the Type 23 had downscaled its main gun and armor, primarily to consume fewer resources.

Mistral, in her approach to Armored Warfare, had chosen quantity over quality, and their Mark 4, now sporting the eponymous nickname of "Shanmao" thanks to both the new Emperor and its name in Menagerie service, was one of the most common tanks of the First Great War, and in one form or another had remained in service in parts of Remnant ever since, included upgraded variants serving Mistral itself. While it lacked the thick armor and world-beating firepower of its Mantle counterparts, it was fast, maneuverable, and easy to produce in quantity.
This mindset had carried over into Mistral's rearmament program, and her latest machine, the Mark 10 "Ocelot" retains these values, albeit in a massively updated form. Sacrificing thick armor for firepower and speed, the vehicle's low profile allows it to use a stealth element in its engagements with opponents.

Atlas, as Mantle before it was the progenitor of Armored Warfare, had the most experience with tanks by the outbreak of GW1, and its vaunted "Beowulf" Heavy tanks nearly carried the day in the later stages of the war. Valuing survivability and firepower over speed, the plodding machines were as much a psychological foe as a physical one, with "Beowulf Blight" afflicting Vale and Vacuo Tank crews, who often reported encountering the machines even if no Mantle tanks were present at all in the engagements in question.

Necessity forced Atlas to press the machines back into service following the rise of the New Path, though with major upgrades in engine, electronics and targeting, and they represented the bulk of Atlas' tank forces throughout much of the Early War years following the invasion of Vale.
It was in these operations that the vehicle's shortcomings became apparent: while the machines were perfectly serviceable in the northern climes that characterized the first Great War, the southern invasion route of Operation Settling Accounts forced the machines to plod through much more tropical climates, where their bulk and obtuse size was a much greater hindrance to maintaining the New Path's Advance. Pushing along dirt roads and through thick forests, they often found themselves bogged down or forced into extremely tight quarters where enemy ambush parties awaited.

The use of the venerated tanks was always intended as a stopgap measure, until Atlas' reinvigorated scientific developments could bar fruit, and bear fruit they did: within the first year of the war the new "Beowulf Alfa" units were already undergoing testing, and by the time of Vale's Operation Counterpunch following the Battle of Mountain Glenn these units were able to rush to the front to counterattack against Vale's forces.
The Alfas were subsequently at the vanguard of the push into the Sanctuary Mountains that protected Vale's eastern borders, and were the forefront of the Battle of Mount Adrian, facing Vale's tank forces in the valleys and mountain roads.

Vacuo, as the last belligerent to come into the First Great War, had had time to analyze and develop its tank designs, and so by the time of their entry had fielded the light but eminently serviceable "Jerboa" to defend the desert kingdom. Using elements from each of the warring powers, the tanks were quite the surprise to the Mantle and Mistral forces that landed for the final battle of the war, and oversaw the surrender and disarmament of the Mistral and Mantle armies following the climactic struggle.  However Vacuo's collapse following the war saw many of the machines scrapped or pressed into service by desert warlords, leaving few to defend the kingdom from Cinder Fall and the Red Fang.
The Vacuo Massacre was a wake-up call for the citizens of the ransacked land, and reconstruction had begun almost before the debris had stopped smoldering. with an influx of cash and resources following the collapse of Schnee Dust and the Atlas Depression, Vacuo was not only able to rapidly rebuild and expand, but construct what was by far the most technologically advanced army on Remnant.
That technology would not save them, however, as the chaos that followed the Annihilation of Shade allowed New Path loyalists to rapidly sweep to power and hand control of the Kingdom over to Atlas.
Much of Vacuo's military and scientific talent would flee to sanctuary in Vale, but a small but determined force under Colonel Chandee Vastavik would hole up in the "Allemagne Pocket" to the south, where they would harry and harass the New Path's war effort, making use of their assets to cause Atlas as much of a headache as possible.
Alas, it would come to naught, as the "Battle of the Dunes" would see the Free Vacuo Forces driven into flight to safety in Mistral following an all-out assault by Atlas' Vacuo Corps, but their efforts would not be wholly in vain, as the need to divert resources from the assault on Mistral delayed the Assault on Vale itself by several months, given them time to finish construction of the Thermic Dust Bomb.

But all the powers could see...a Climax was rapidly approaching. With Mistral finally declaring itself for an alliance with Vale following their discovery of the New Path's supporting of rebellions in Anima and a revelation of the New Path's role in the Annihilation of Shade and Vacuo beginning to rumble with revolt, the end of the War would soon come, one way or another...

"The world is not built on the laws they love. Not on friendship, but on mutual interest. Not on peace, but on victory by any means.

And if life is to live, if anything is to survive through the end of all things, it will live not by the smile but by the sword, not in a soft place but in a hard hell, not in the rotting bog of artificial paradise but in the cold hard self-verifying truth of that one ultimate arbiter, the only judge, the power that is its own metric and it's own source - existence at any cost. Strip away the lies and truces and delaying tactics they call 'civilization' and this is what remains, this beautiful shape.

The fate of everything is made like this, in the collision, the test of one praxis against another. This is how the world changes: one way meets a second way, and they discharge their weapons, they exchange their words and markets, they contest and in doing so they petition each other for the right to go on being something, instead of nothing. This is the universe figuring out what it should be in the end.

And it is majestic. Majestic. It is the only thing that can be true in and of itself.

And it is what I am." - The Winnower/Darkness/Deep/Black Edge/(Doom Doritos)

In the eyes of Butler and the old Mantle romantics, payback is exactly what it is.
In their eyes, Mantle's army was never defeated: the Great war ended because the King surrendered in Vacuo, not his army in Vale. They were literally at the gates of Vale when the order to retreat came down.
For 100 years the sons of Mantle have burned with resentment, and the time has finally come to, well, settle the accounts. Only when Butler has pissed on the King's grave, dismantled everything he has built (such as the Huntsmen) and asserted Solitas' rightful and correct rule will he be satisfied.
