Zelda had a lot of time to herself during Wind Waker, and I can’t imagine that a pirate like her would stay in that sword chamber for very long before wanting to explore…and accidentally speaking with her past lives. It only makes sense that something like this happened during that time, because the next time you see her she’s ready and raring to go, accepting her bloodline and wanting to make a new Hyrule.
…It makes for a more interesting story than “She sat there waiting like a good little princess".
