Gong Hoy Fat Choy 恭喜發財 Happy Year of the Horse 小馬 Everyone!
Been working on this for the last two nights. As someone of Chinese heritage, born on the Year of the Horse, and as a fan of MLP, I had a lot of fun drawing this. Hope everyone has a good 2 week Lunar New Year celebration! Best wishes for this new year!
The initial drawing itself was based around the Chinese painting I learned as a child. I drew Pinkie Pie’s hair in the style of how clouds appear in Chinese art. Three of the ponies represent the Fu Lu Shou 福祿壽 deities, the bat over Fluttershy is drawn in the traditional style as opposed to the MLP style which represents prosperity, the peach is from Taoist myth and represents longevity, Rarity is wearing the traditional phoenix crown and red dress worn for social events like weddings, and Spike has a loin dance. Spike is with the lion dance outfit ironically, as most people assume the lion is actually a dragon, which is a completely separate dance and outfit. My spelling isn’t the best, but I am sure I got all the Chinese characters right. Happy New Year
