In the 1890s there was a huge boom in the popularity of bicycles with the advent of the "safety bicycle" and inflatable tire that are very close to the design of bikes we have today. The big wheel Penny-Farthing that we associate with old time bikes quickly fell out of favor as direct drive was made obsolete by chain driven gears.Related content
