I think the funniest headcanon I've come to decide is absolutely true 100% is that Merula absolutely never names her pets. She has this whole thing against being vulnerable and admitting to her own feelings so naming a pet means admitting she loves and cares about it so she immediately refuses to give her pets names. Which leads to funny situations where all her friends know her soulpet as simply "The Bird"

The truth is tho that The Bird does in fact have a name, Merula's just too embarrassed to say it out loud when other people can hear it. Because The Bird is a bit of an anxious bean Merula wond up calling her Baby as like an insult. Then it kind of stuck and now its just straight up the bird's name. Every now and again she'll glare the thing down like "im insulting you, because youre a whiny baby." But Baby just happily chirps back at her.

Merula much like Carmilla also winds up having to learn how to be patient but in a far different way. She also is forced to be gentle and it turns out Baby is incredibly friendly and needs attention or else she gets very depressed.
