the lore behind the vodyani is quite neat

the TLR is that they started out as a race of aliens on a planet where they had poluted and shit up the place, dying, they found some ancient tech by ancient aliens that had digitized themselves. Using this and starting to worship these original Virtual Endless, they were able to do something similar to themselves, achieving virtual immortality by harvesting "essence" from all life around them, to coalesce new virtual vodyani.

calling them space vampires is... misleading though. They're space cultists, who convince their worshipers to sacrifice themselves, so that they can make more of themselves. Sometimes they don't ask, they just bring harvester fleets to nom your planetary populations.
