Description I figured that this contest for Disney was the perfect time to go back and explore my childhood. Robin Hood was my movie when I was little and, ironically, I see its effects heavily appearing in what I watch and write today. I still love chaotic good and chaotic neutral…the grey-hats are the best and small rebel factions rebelling against overpowering evil organized ruling bodies? Ooooooh yeah!

So, given all that, it’s only natural that I decided to examine the Villains in that light as well and I realized that the three baddies from this movie encompassed the three classic archetypes for male villainy! So, without further ado, let me explain:

Prince John: Prince John is what in the same type of bad guy that’s common in dystopia sci-fi, spy films, and ‘take-over-the-world’ plots. He’s cruel, sadistic, he’ll order heinous acts against people, and he’s also a mad genius always coming up with plots and traps for our heroes. But you want him to get his hands (or paws in this case) dirty? It’s not going to happen! That’s what minions are there for!

This type of villain is also prone to being the first to abandon a sinking ship, leaving the rest of their staff to die. Other examples of this kind of villain is Stryker from “X2”, Saruman from “The Lord of the Rings” and the Emperor from “Star Wars”.

Sherriff of Nottingham: I sat down and thought about it once before I came to this conclusion. Compared to SOME villains the Sherriff is one of the most evil guys to ever appear on a movie screen! In the first ten minutes of his on-screen time he manages to harass a member of the Church, beats up a cripple, steals a child’s birthday present (while stealing from a widow at the same freaking time!), makes a child cry and steals from a (supposedly) blind person! All in the first TEN MINUTES! What did he do after he left the screen? Kick a puppy? Knock an old lady out of a wheelchair and steal her purse?

Anyways the Sherriff falls into the category of brute villains. These are the guys that are big bullies and LOVE IT! They like to scream, shout, blow up villages full of innocent people, beat up the good guys and during the climax while the Prince Johns are running away the Sherriff characters are ramping up the crazy and pursuing the hero relentlessly. Other characters who fall into this category are Colonel Quaritch from “Avatar”, General Zhao from “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, and Rochefort from “The Three Musketeers”.

Sir Hiss: Sir Hiss is actually in the category of a “quasi-villain”. Usually these characters are more greedy and stupid then outright evil. Often they’re the first ones to realize the main villains are losing their minds and if you’re going to have a villain turn into a good guy it’s usually the Sir Hiss of your story. Like I said they’re not evil. Usually they’re tempted over by promises of wealth, fame or whatever else their trigger point is…and usually we hate them the most because subconsciously we relate to them the most. They take the easy path…they’re not like the heroes who’ll stand for good no matter what…and, secretly, many of us wonder if that’s the path we might take if put in a similar pot of boiling water.

Good examples of this type of character are Chad Decker from “V-2009 reboot”, Parker from “Avatar” and, oddly enough, Silver from “Treasure Planet”.

Now, to be fair, I did leave out one type of male villain simply because there was no example of it here in a Disney film and that is the category of the sympathetic villain. These are the guys who do horrible, horrible things…but we know their history, we feel bad for them and we can ALMOST rationalize why they’re doing it. Also, normally, they were screwed over by the hero(es) at some point. Examples of this group is Magneto from pretty much any “X-Men” reboot, Loki from the “Thor” movie and Michael from “Stargate: Atlantis”

Well that’s all for this edition of “SpaceRose’s Rambling” . Maybe someday I’ll tell you the story about how I learned everything I needed to know about female villains from one scene in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and one certain Nazi scientist! If you’ve seen the movie you know what scene I’m talking about! But that’s another story for another time! Bye!

Disclaimer: All mentioned characters belong to their respective owners and companies. I own nothing…just borrowing for fun and practice.

Good pic but loved the villain analysis breakdown. Well thought out and interesting...you should do more character type breakdowns and such!

Thanks^^ I'm debating a few...there's all kinds of characters out there. Plus do break-downs of individual ones...want to do a break-down of why Flynn is so much cooler then Aladdin I think...could be an interesting comparison...

Yeah...he's great!^^ So evil...but such a dork at the same time. He may be the real villain but the Sheriff was the menacing one....even if he does wear pink.
