Description Part of an independent study project I'm doing for this semester, developing the environments and world of Parallel Parchment, my old webcomic. (All the comics pages are still up in the Parallel Parchment folder in my gallery, or on [link] if you want to read it.)

This image features the Great Tree, which is really the heart of the Lost Library.

Are you ever going to continue working on Parallel Parchment?

...eventually? At this point, I think what would happen is a complete re-write, including the first few chapters. Part of what this project was about was to develop the world a little more, and in doing that I am finding out more about the characters and the plot. However, if I were ever to work on the comic again I would want to make sure I had the story and plot in place first before I started work... because I didn't the first time, and it didn't go well. >_>;

I liked it.

I ran into you at ACen a few years back and started reading it then. It was good. Let me know when you start it up again, I've been checking every so often since you stopped working on it. ^ ^;

Aww. I did put up a note on the main page saying "sorry guys, on hiatus forever" so I hate to think of people checking back anyway. D: If it makes you feel any better, while there might not be more comic pages, I'll probably be doing more of these little world-building things. And I do kind of want to put up the 2-3 uncolored pages I have if I can ever find the script for them.

Like I said, if I do get back to it someday, it'll probably be in another year or so, once I get settled with my career and if I ever have free time outside of that. I just want to make sure I have enough built up in advance that I don't do what I did last time, which was to do two or three pages and then disappear for 4-6 months.

I know, I read the note, but I was hoping you'd come back to it some time. So I checked just in case.

Would you say that this Great Tree is the Tree of Knowledge?

Yep. That's generally the idea.

Reminds me of another library picture I saw once. It was where each library book was a brick in the structure.

It was by an artist named Rob Gonsalves. Does artwork that's like a fusion of M.C. Escher and Salvador Dali.

Interesting. I think the actual line I wrote in the comic was "Some say that every leaf on the tree is a book in the library, and it may be true. No one could ever count either of them, so we'll never know." The Tree is definitely meant to be the heart and soul of this particular library... one of the ideas I had was that as certain plot events occur, the leaves begin to fall off the Tree and the Tree begins to die.

It's an incredible piece of work.

Makes me think of an idea I had if I could construct my own library. The ceiling would be like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Only it would have murals from famous books.

Such as Alice sitting next to the Caterpillar on his mushroom. Captain Ahab spearing the white whale. Dr. Frankenstein in his lab about to give life to the monster.

Thank you.

It's a good idea. My personal choice would probably to put in as many stained glass windows, just because I do think they're so beautiful.

Actually I had ideas of putting in stained glass windows as well.

My library would be a chapel to written word.
