Long ago in the untamed wilderness of Japan, creatures who thrived off the fear of men ruled the imaginations ofΒ those wise enough to never venture too far from the path. Foolish skeptics were picked off and never heard of again. They were said to have been spirited away by the Oni, Japanese demonsΒ that had a devilish appearance and brought misfortune to anyone unluckyΒ enough to stumble upon their merrymaking.
But who has time for archaic Machiavellian concepts? Lost people are just a magnet for unwanted attention, and these introverted creatures prefer to draw attention away from their affairs.
Time has bred calmer, shyer, inquisitiveΒ Oni, now called the Oni-ko, able to hide in human society and live without drawing attention.
